Bill Would Grant New Yorkers 3 Months Paid Bereavement Leave To Mourn Loss Of Loved Ones

August 2, 2018 at 7:59 pm

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Lawmakers want every worker in New York to get three months paid bereavement leave to mourn the loss of a loved one.

But many business owners say it could be crippling. Will Gov. Andrew Cuomo sign it into law?

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Richard Funke, of upstate Batavia, whose son died.

“I’ve experienced the pain of losing a child. The grief can be unpredictable and overwhelming,” he said in a statement. “No employee should have to fear losing their job in order to take the time they need to mourn.”

Sen. David Carlucci, of Clarkstown, is cosponsoring the bill, which quietly passed at the end of the legislative session and is awaiting action by the governor.

“We need to make it as easy as possible, be humane and understand the real cost involved in losing a loved one,” said Carlucci.

The bill covers the death of a spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, in-law, grandparent or grandchild.

The law, if passed, phases in what workers can collect between 50 to 67 percent of the average weekly wage — $680 a week.

But Greg Greenwood, owner of Bleeker Street Pizza, said it could cripple mom and pop stores.

It is always the most openly stupid crap that flies through the ‘system’.

Same subject-

As someone who is a Brooklyn Dodger fan and ‘remembers’ when Vin Scully was a ‘wet behind the ears kid’ (he was older than me but after Red Barber everyone is/was young).

If you would have told me then that BASEBALL players would be taking ‘paternity leave’ in the middle of a pennant race I would have told you that you are crazy.

My kids were born before MAN was allowed in ‘room’. I just went to my favorite watering hole, told them if call for me I was there and I would ‘check’ in every so often.

As to visiting hours (think she was in there 4 days for each(??) not sure) but I would always manage to get to the hospital about half an hour before visiting hours were over.

And - believe it or not - I was one among the ‘better ones’.

It’s the slippery slope. If someone can get three months for a spouse, someone will want a month for a pet. Or a week for a doll.

Why would 3-months off be beneficial?

How much time off do they get for the loss of their blanky-blank minds?

Yep, I went to work the day after my mom passed. I had to keep my mind occupied with something/anything.

Heysus christ. Geeze, do the funeral, the after service, take a couple unpaid days off than MAN UP or WOMAN UP and go back to work and carry on with your life. We all die and should never expect the spectacle of a funeral, especially on our employers dime.

This is the main reason my legal docs say cremation with NO Boo-hoo funeral for stupid platitudes how great I was. Plus, NO reception so everyone can stand around and eat and just shoot the shit?

If someone wants to raise a glass in my honor in some bar, I'm good with that. I hate funerals - always have. Why would I want to make my loved ones and friends feel so bad just because I kicked the bucket. I've also had a problem with "respect for the dead". If the person was an ass in life, why does he/she get respect just for dying?

Screw all that. Turn me to ashes (I won't know) and intern them next to my Father in the Riverside National Cemetery. Or if too much hassle, throw them in the trash. It's up to my Wife, who I would want to get on with her life after her natural mourning. Paid bereavement leave? She wouldn't do such because of her work responsibilities and work ethic.

What if you are happy that person died? Dance on their grave.
Hated them and or a big inheritance?

Pathetic.

Hopefully, this jackass will lose his.

You want to pay for it with your tax money ?

Exactly. That's my point. If the State forces private business to pay for it then there is no pain. If the State is FORCED to pay for it then there is accountability. Then if your taxes go up to pay for yet another Stalinist program, blame the State.

There are ways to hold the job for a period of time w/o paying them for tending to immature emotional problems...obtain doctor's care and fill out the paperwork....IMO, those who need 3 months to grieve before they can return to work are a special danger to themselves if they suddenly have no responsibilities to force them to move on.

Good thought, but I don’t see anyone holding government accountable for spending and we’re deeply in debt.

I’d don’t think it’s the government’s place to dictate employment terms (other than to protect people’s constitutional rights).

Because this tactic has worked so well for every other government handout right?
Look at all those programs that got repealed because of the outcry over higher taxes.....
