Chicago Officials Looking at Universal Basic Income Program

Officials in Chicago want to test the waters of offering a universal basic income.
A majority of city council members are telling Mayor Rahm Emanuel to form a task force to look into Universal Basic Income programs, which is essentially a periodic check from the government with no strings attached.
The City Council wants to explore a program that would send at least $500 a month to 1,000 Chicago families. The same families also would get Earned Income Tax Credit money on a monthly basis rather than once a year.
47th Ward Ald. Ameya Pawars resolution said the money would "help working people and families become more resilient to day-to-day financial emergencies, are able to make rent, cover childcare, and put food on the table."
At his speech for the annual Nelson Mandela lecture in Johannesburg last month, former President Barack Obama endorsed the idea of a UBI as more jobs are automated.
"Were going to have to be more imaginative," he said. "Were going to have to consider new ways of thinking about these problems like a universal income, a review of our work week and how we train our young people."

If they did off the surplus is reduced
Bribe them before they go to the streets.
I thought pick pocketing was illegal.

As long as you count raising taxes as not pick pocketing ... with all the people fleeing the state, this socialist idea is going to be difficult even in pilot program form
Guess taxpayers ain’t fleeing the state fast enough.

Occasional-Cortex will explain how to pay for this.
Well, it's down right silly to think that these people don't have any idea whet their doing... Of course they know what their doing... Destroying America..! "Land of the free", Home of the use to be brave...
Nowadays we just set back watch as the commies rip and tear at the things that made America great... Work ethic, schools, Christian morals, family, anything that's decent and wholesome they will attack and try to destroy... Very soon we we'll be fighting in the streets, that is, IF we can find the necessary stones to defend ourselves.. :(
Chicago needs to take care of "business" first and then waste their money on something productive instead of giving it away.
And by "business", I mean the death and carnage laid upon the city every day and week by criminal gang bangers wielding weapons that are illegal in the city.
Reminds me of the bumper sticker I saw a while back.
"Instead of trying to save the planet, how about turning on your turn signal."
Instead of giving non-existent money away to freeloaders to satisfy some liberal fantasy, try fixing the murder and crime rate in the city first.
More bribery to “get out the vote”.
Please identify the magic source of the free cash.
Universal Basic Income is stealth reparations. Americans will never accept reparations as such, but will fall for the ruse of Basic Income. Watch how selective the left will be about who qualifies for this.
Sanctuary city and free money. What a great way to get all of the illegal aliens in the U.S. to go to the same place.
Time to buy stock in Newports, Old English malt liquor, Air Jordans, 22” rims, and Crack....
It is government money. Like the electricity that powers electric cars it is magically produced from rainbows and unicorn farts.
Redistributionism + budget deficits + confiscatory taxation + government borrowing + creation of money out of thin air/inflation + government spending = capital decumulation = economic decline & decay = mass poverty
Provide incentives for bad decisions.
Ah, to own the u-haul outlet in sh*tcago
I favor UBI if, and this is a big if, it stays the same amount for everyone receiving it and it replaces welfare programs. But if people start using it as a way to make income equal it will fail and if it is added to the already burdened government programs it will fail. It should go without saying that it would be limited to U.S. citizens.
I know one of the big arguments against it is “It will discourage people from getting jobs.” Well good. There are some people I really would rather not be out in the day to day work force because frankly they are way past useless and I do not want to deal with them.
Stronger investment returns in 2016 couldnt stave off growth in the unfunded liabilities for most of the 11 local government pension funds tracked annually by a non-partisan Illinois legislative commission. The returns did, however, limit the growth to mostly modest levels and helped fend off a weakening of the funded ratios for about half the funds and limited the erosion for others. The unfunded tab for Chicago and its sister agencies combined with the water district rose to $38.4 billion from $35.4 billion in fiscal 2016 for a collective funded ratio of 38.6%, while the funded ratio deteriorated from 40%. Adding in the Cook County and the suburban and downstate fund brings the total unfunded figure to about $50 billion, up from $47 billion in 2015.
The $50 billion is part of a collective $185.2 billion of collective public pension fund unfunded liabilities across 671 funds reported in fiscal 2016. That compares with $168.2 billion in fiscal 2015. The collective funded ratio deteriorated to 47.9% from 49.4%, according to the biennial report last fall by the Illinois Department of Insurance. All of Chicagos funds deteriorated. The citys funding overhaul is just beginning to take effect but improvements are years off. And that’s just improvement, not cure.
And they want to create more liabilities when they cant even fund from the sources that were in themselves solvent until they started robbing from them to keep their heads above water? This is exactly how the federal deficit started in the 1960s, borrowing from one fund to bail out another with no return to the loan. And they were working with a whole lot more money/worth than Chicago will see for many years under normal circumstances.
This is why liberalism just doesnt work. No one can ever pay the bill but the people that put them there. And the voters are too stupid to see it by re-electing the same liars and thieves.
