Andrew Cuomo unknowingly confesses to breaking federal law with eagle feather story

ALBANY, N.Y. — At an event in the Adirondacks last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recounted a treasured memory of the time his family retrieved an eagle feather from Saranac Lake and kept it after one of the beautiful birds swooped near his canoe.

In telling the story, the New York Democrat was unknowingly confessing a crime.

A federal law prohibits non-Native Americans from possessing bald eagle parts, including feathers. The law has been on the books for nearly 80 years, but most Americans, Cuomo included, probably don’t know about it.

Cuomo, a lawyer and former federal official, revealed his legal faux pas Tuesday while announcing an economic development grant for the village of Saranac Lake.

After The Associated Press in Albany inquired about the issue, Cuomo spokesman Richard Azzopardi said the family was unaware of the federal law when they took the feather from the water.

“We have two options, put it back in the river or donate it to a US Fish and Wildlife repository,” Azzopardi wrote in an email. “We’ll ?do one or the other.”

I wonder if his story is fake...in which case he’ll have to find a feather to maintain his credibility but then be open to a federal charge of illegal eagle feather possession...now that would be a laugher!(Cuomo...guilty of having an “illegal eagle” ego complex! hahaha!)

"Raid his house."

Make sure you get a key from an undisclosed source like they did for Manafort's house.

In this youtube clip (about the 2:15 mark) of a show from the very distant past, comedian George Carlin makes clear what the Indians do with those eagle feathers which the rest of us are not allowed to touch.

George Carlin - Standup - "Indian Staff Sergeant" - Merv Griffin Show - 1965

(George Carlin was a wacky liberal in most of his political views, but, while searching for something else on youtube, I accidently bumped into this Carlin clip a couple days ago from pretty early in his career, and I thought it was pretty funny.)

Was the law written when bald eagles were endangered?
Maybe that’s the reason. They are not endangered anymore.

Agreed! There are quite bigger fish to fry and the keeping of a feather as a crime is not one of them

David Gregory had an Illegal 30 Round Magazine when he was Hosting Meet The Press which is based in Washington DC.

It was Legally purchased by a Producer of the Show outside of DC, Illegally transported to the DC Studio and Illegally transferred to David Gregory’s possession.

It was fine though. He was just using it to try and make the NRA guy he was interviewing look bad.

Journalists are special don’t you know. Laws are only for the Irredeemable Deplorable types.

Ridiculous law unless you somebody killed the eagle to get the feather.

And how is the District Attorney going to be able to prove that the eagle died naturally, or that the feather just "fell off" when the eagle swooped down?

Since it is neigh impossible to falsify (i.e., disprove) such a "tall tale" (me and my buddy were just sitting there, in our canoe, minding our own business, when suddenly this eagle came swooping down, and moments later this lone eagle feather wafted down on the wind into our canoe..." - or "Honest, Mr. Forest Ranger, sir, we bought this authentic Indian headress from a tribesman who swore that the eagle had died a natural death..."), the law is written in the strictest possible fashion.

Regards,

The Eagle is such a notable bird, I'd say it's impossible for Cuomo not to have known the law.

There have been hundreds of Lawsuits.

I agree, even if it's the despicable Cuomo.

The dumb a** part of the law that Indians are not restricted in any way from obtaining, owning Eagle Feathers.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Now, if Cuomo was a hunter or outdoors man, he would know the law. Except he goes around wearing pussi hats and pontificatingating about guns, which again we see his ignorance.

That was excellent. Wow. A comedian par excellence. I never saw him in short hair and a suit. I would not have recognized him. Thanks for sharing.
