Andrew Cuomo unknowingly confesses to breaking federal law with eagle feather story

ALBANY, N.Y. — At an event in the Adirondacks last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recounted a treasured memory of the time his family retrieved an eagle feather from Saranac Lake and kept it after one of the beautiful birds swooped near his canoe.

In telling the story, the New York Democrat was unknowingly confessing a crime.

A federal law prohibits non-Native Americans from possessing bald eagle parts, including feathers. The law has been on the books for nearly 80 years, but most Americans, Cuomo included, probably don’t know about it.

Cuomo, a lawyer and former federal official, revealed his legal faux pas Tuesday while announcing an economic development grant for the village of Saranac Lake.

After The Associated Press in Albany inquired about the issue, Cuomo spokesman Richard Azzopardi said the family was unaware of the federal law when they took the feather from the water.

“We have two options, put it back in the river or donate it to a US Fish and Wildlife repository,” Azzopardi wrote in an email. “We’ll ?do one or the other.”

Two things. He knew it was illegal and they don’t give the “little people” a break.

Ridiculous law unless you killed the eagle to get the feather.

That was what people were doing and then claiming they "found" the feathers or bones.

Which is why the law was written that way.

Since the eagles are no longer endangered the law probably should be done away with.

Now you just made me watch half hour of old Carlin on Jimmy Dean and Flip Wilson.

Too bad Carlin later became such a nasty vile piece of work.

I lived in Southeast Alaska for 25 years and if you really want to see a Bald Eagle, go to the local landfill. They are there by the hundreds, especially in the winter.
Before statehood in 1959, the entire region was pretty much run by the salmon canneries and their fish traps. There was a two dollar bounty on our national bird until 1952 - some guys would climb up to a nest in the spring and grab the newborn eaglets for some quick cash.

I’m sure Cuomo has Native American heritage. He just hasn’t claimed it yet. Probably related to Fauxcahontas.

He has to make amends. Dousing himself with kerosene and lighting a match would do it.

That thought came to mind when I first read the article, they’re both liars. :^)

Almost fifty years ago I was given an eagle feather from his grandfather’s bonnet by a dear friend whom I considered a brother. He told me it would always protect me. He was a fullblooded Eastern Cherokee. Woe be anyone who would try to take it away from me!

Cuomo included, probably don’t know about it.

Ignorance is no excuse for the law. The IRS will also tell you this.

Lock his sorry ass up.

That really is too bad.

I did the same thing you did -- I watched a couple other of his routines I saw there.   (Did you see the one called "Baseball vs Football"?)

An old snowbird I know found an eagle feather and stuck it in his hat. He didn’t really think about it until in the airport. A native American walked up to him and in a challenging way said; “Cherokee, Oklahoma”, he just looked at him and named a tribe from Montana. The guy nodded his head and walked on.

Needless to say, he got rid of the feather.
