Dem lawmaker seeks to lower voting age to 16

Rep. Grace Meng is sponsoring a resolution that would extend the right to vote to U.S. citizens 16 years of age or older.

The New York Democrat’s resolution, introduced earlier this month, would repeal the 26th Amendment of the Constitution, which currently states the right to vote for citizens who are 18 years of age or older "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State."

If the resolution is passed, the amendment would instead say the right to vote for citizens who are 16 years of age or older "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State."

The resolution comes several months after a City Council member in Washington, D.C., Charles Allen (D), introduced legislation that would lower the age to vote in federal and local elections to 16.

At the time, Allen said he proposed the legislation after seeing high school students organize and participate in the March for Our Lives event in D.C. to protest gun violence and demand new gun laws.

The U.S. voting age was last changed in 1971 after a decades-long fight. Proponents of the 26th Amendment argued that any citizen who was old enough to be drafted into the military at age 18 should also be afforded the right to vote.

People should not be allowed to vote if they are mental defectives or on welfare. A voter should have some skin in the game.

“They tried it in a 1968 film called “Wild in the Streets”.”

The full length movie is on youtube. Once you reach age 30 you are removed from society and exiled to a concentration camp where you’re fed a diet of LSD.

>>We should be raising the voting age not lowering it.<<

With an exception for military service.

If you carry a weapon in service to our country you have earned the right to vote early.

IMHO.

My realistic side says "Who cares, 18 year olds don't vote anyway, what makes this idiot think that 16 year olds will?"

My practical side says "Dems are losing, and trying to recruit."

My wisea$$ side says, "So, Dems think that people need to be 21 to own a gun, drink, and smoke. They need to be taken care of on their parents' insurance until they're 26. But they're responsible enough to vote for politicians at 16. This says something about the value of politicians in our society."

The voting age has nothing to do with the draft anymore as there is no draft. I say raise it.

Thanks yesthatjallen. Even in Michigan with its Motor City, driver’s licenses are still at age 16 but with restrictions until age 18. I believe some states don’t license until 18. A single, higher age for driving would be a good fit with a single standard drinking age, either some years younger (to learn to cope with being UI) or some years older (to learn to cope with driving first).

Regardless, the voting age should be returned to 21, and that new amendment would include prohibition of voting for illegals. I’d settle for the second half of that.

>>We should raise the voting age to the same as that required to purchase a handgun.

Exactly.. If they can’t be trusted with a bullet, they can’t be trusted with a ballot.

NO NO NO! The voting age should be NEGATIVE FIVE, and -- obviously -- since the future fetus cannot indicate it's desired vote, the parents should be able to vote for them up to the age of 18!

The parents just declare they have the intent to have 1 to N children, and ballots will be issued.

This is Common Sense Voting!

Move it back to 21, employed, property owners, or veterans. Definite proof of citizenship and residence.

Democrats really are stupid and know nothing about the Constitution. If they did, this idiot would know that you don’t modify or delete a part of the Constitution/Amendment by a resolution. But then Democrats don’t give a damn about the Constitution or what it says unless what they think it says supports what they want.

The Democrat Party knows that in large Democrat/Left-run cities such as Chicago, too many 16-year-olds don’t make it to 18 ... that’s a lot of lost votes, man!!

shall not be denied or abridged

Funny how the wording is SO important for the 26th Amendment, but could not POSSIBLY be the intent of the 2nd Amendment.

I’m all for it. If 16 year olds can handle firearms and effectively shoot teachers and fellow students, that proves they are responsible enough to vote for her.

Next thing you know, she’ll advocate the legalization of marijuana and lower the legal age for that and alcohol to 16.

She knows about hemorrhaging voters. Search her name + “tampons”.
