Parkland Bombshells from Top Cop: Staff Should’ve Been Armed, Shooter Used 5-round Magazines
AllOutdoor ^ | 8/13/18 | Jon Stokes

Posted on 08/14/2018 5:09:45 AM PDT by Jed Eckert

There are two bombshells dropped in New York Times editor Patricia Mazzei’s Twitter feed this morning, one of which has me rethinking some things and the other of which should cause gun controllers to rethink some things. First, though, the Twitter thread in question:

"Sheriff Bob Gualtieri of Pinellas County, head of Florida's state-appointed commission investigating the Parkland shooting, said today that video from inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School showed the gunman, Nikolas Cruz, had to reload his AR-15 assault rifle several times."

— Patricia Mazzei (@PatriciaMazzei) August 9, 2018

The first tweet in that thread that caused my eyes to bug out was this one, in which the lawman who heads up the Florida state commission on investigating the Parkland shooting comes right and out and says that staff should’ve been armed:

"If he had somebody in there with a gun, they could have mitigated this," the sheriff said. "There were opportunities for staff to have intervened if they had been armed."

— Patricia Mazzei (@PatriciaMazzei) August 9, 2018

I will confess that I have historically not been a fan of the armed teacher idea the NRA pushes after ever shooting. My reasoning is straightforward: these shootings are a such a statistical rarity that schools shouldn’t be going to great lengths to prep for them. And if that prep involves arming up school staff across the country, then the number of negligent discharges (or firearms left unattended) will go up, and the negative press will blow back on gun rights.

Furthermore, active shooter preparations that create a “threat” type of environment at the school, and put the kids in a “lockdown” mindset — things like school shooter drills or visibly armed staff — only serve to create a climate of fear among parents and children that feeds support for gun control measures.

But I’m increasingly warming up concealed carry by highly trained staff, and this Parkland thing may put me over the top. It’s certainly where the sheriff’s mind is at on this issue, and I think when it all shakes out there’s going to be a lot more acceptance of this approach.

Now for the other tweet that should cause heads to pop, but probably won’t:

"There were several other times when he was in that school that his gun was empty," the sheriff said, noting that the rifle had a six-round magazine. A reload break allowed a teacher on the third floor of the freshman building to move students away to safety, he said."

— Patricia Mazzei (@PatriciaMazzei) August 9, 2018

First, there is no “six-round” mag that I’m aware of. He’s probably referring to a five-round mag, with one in the chamber, and the reporter got confused. This makes sense, since Florida is a state that has a five-round limit on centerfire rifles used for hunting. So it looks like the perp was using five-round mags for this attack. (Actually, they were probably 10-rounders with a limiter.)

So let’s be clear on what this means: the 9th worst mass shooting in US history, with a 17-person fatality count, was carried out using magazines that are half the size the state and federal Assault Weapon Ban bans want us limited to (i.e. 10 rounds).

Truly, magazine capacity does not matter for mass shootings, and Parkland should be the nail in the coffin for that myth.

Magazine capacity matters when you’re under time pressure because the target is shooting back, i.e. in a gunfight. It doesn’t matter when you’ve got plenty of time to reload. And if you look at the duration of these mass shooting events, the number of shots fired, and the realistic rate-of-fire of the weapon, these guys are spending a bunch of time not shooting, so they can reload at leisure.

Anyway, the next time somebody tells you that a ban on mags over 10 rounds will save lives, point them to Parkland.

I recall early on it was briefly reported the shooter used either 5 round or 10 round mags. Then nothing until now.

Surprised anyone from the NYT would put that out on twitspace......but it is interesting. I don’t believe there would be some national move to arm teachers. The fact they “could be” armed would be enough to drastically reduce school shootings. This is the goal right? So we allow folks who want to exercise their constitutional rights to do so. What a novel idea.

The left often opposes the idea of having armed guards -- or staff -- in schools, based on the idea that having more guns in schools will make them more dangerous.

There have been some incidents of guns left unattended, etc., but I cannot recall a single instance in which an accidental discharge or found weapon killed anyone in a school. Zero support for the idea that kids will start dying if we ensure that someone -- either full-time guard or trained staff -- is armed.

200 of 1032 Texas school districts now have the Marshal system or the Guardian system both of which feature armed teachers and staff. The recent shootings were in a school district that had signed up for the Marshal system training but had not yet implemented it.

The two systems work and they are a direct threat to those who would try to harm our kids.

From the beginning it was fake news lying about “arming teachers.” It was always and only about not disarming the concealed carry people who are on staff at schools.

That concept is exactly why crime in Texas is so low. “An armed society is a polite society.”

I’m curious. Have discipline problems at those 200 school districts decreased?

Here's what you unleash via the atrocity of "diversity."

Jan Jordan, is the Broward police captain who told sheriff's deputies to 'stage' and form a perimeter outside
Stoneman Douglas High School as students and teachers were being massacred inside on February 14.

Jan Jordan, 49, was in charge of deputies who responded to the first calls of the shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Imbecile Sheriff Scott Israel had placed Office Captain Jan Jordan in charge of the school massacre scene.

Jordan denied deployment of two Rescue Task Force teams that had arrived.

Three paramedics and 3-4 officers had rushed to the scene to help---but Jordan denied them entry.

"Happy Days" pic of Sheriff Know-Nothing with Cong Debbie W/S.

It is common for a Congressman to secure federal monies for their district.

What part did W/S play in securing the $58 million dollars Obama showered on Broward for keeping minorities off the arrest roles?

Also "in charge" that infamous day was Obama's hand picked pal from Chicago----Broward County School Supt, Robert Runcie.

Runcie got a $28,000 raise and additional benefits under his contract. The deal brings Runcie’s salary to $335,000 and extends his employment through June 30, 2023.

Under the new contract, Runcie would:
-- Be able to trade in 15 of his 29 vacation days for a cash value of $20,500.
-- Get $48,000 contributed annually from the school board for retirement plans
-- Be allowed to earn a pension based on four years of his service in Chicago,
estimated to cost taxpayers $80,000.

More than 30 people lined up mostly to praise Runcie’s work since he started in 2011. Leaders of local community organizations, businesses and schools praised improved student achievement, Runcie’s communication skills and inclusion and protection of immigrants and minorities under Obama's vaunted "Promise" plan.

Runcie collected $53 million tax dollars from Obama for keeping minorities off arrest records.

Then the massacre took place.

Runcie was named Supt of The Year.

The gun control democrats were out there framing this as the shooter had a 30 mag and was spraying bullets all over the place. He was using a 5 round mag. how many times did this kid stop and reload? It does not matter because no one including the cop hiding behind the wall with a gun was not inside to confront the shooter. These shooters are not trained combat vets that can shoot under fire and remain claim. The first time someone confronts these people they are not going to remain claim and shoot with any accuracy. In fact the first time he hears a bullet cut through the air by his head if it did not hit him 9 out of 10 they will panic and hit nothing.

Magazine capacity limits are just a series of intermediate steps. For pistols, 15 to 10 to 7. And they're not done yet. Remember...the ultimate goal is the prohibition and confiscation of all firearms, period. Every last one of them. Always remember that.
