In 1921 my grandfather had already immigrated and established himself working at a steel plant. He’d sent for my grandmother and his kids living in a small village in Sweden. According to my grandmother, the priest refused to give her the documents she needed, probably birth certificates, as he didn’t want any more villagers leaving for America.
