China and the U.S. are set to resume trade talks for the first time since June. A meeting between the two countries, which would be between lower-level officials than earlier talks, would mark a breach in the standoff that has arisen since talks broke down in the spring. U.S. officials have repeatedly said they were open to new talks but insisted that China had walked away rather than offer serious reform.
It still is not clear if Chinas delegation will carry with it a reform offer serious enough to stave off the Trump administrations threat of former tariffs. The U.S. side will be lead by Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs David Malpass.
China is sending a trade envoy to Washington in a renewed effort to end a worsening tariff dispute that has raised worries it will chilal global economic growth.
The delegation led by a deputy commerce minister will visit in late August to discuss issues of mutual concern, the Commerce Ministry announced Thursday. It gave no details of a possible agenda.
The two governments are poised to impose a new round of tariff hikes on $16 billion of each others goods next week in their worsening conflict over Beijings technology policy.
The Commerce Ministry said Beijing reiterates its opposition to unilateralism and trade protectionism and does not accept any unilateral trade restrictions.
This months meeting would be the first between senior U.S. and Chinese officials since June 3 talks in Beijing between Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Vice Premier Liu He ended with no settlement.

Good strategy to see how the midterms are going to turn out as a prelude to 2020.
Now the Chinese are back.
“The Dukes know something”
What now is the next step toward breaking the Chinese economy? We are at war with China right now. It is taking the form of cyberwar, but war it is. China is going after conservative online capacity with its allies the High Tech fifth column and is counting on a Democrat takeover of Congress in November.
Brinksmanship is for the bold and the confident.
P^ssies need not apply.
A billion people without soybeans, or soybeans at inflated prices, through the winter is not a good prospect.
What we don’t need to do is just level the tariffs.
The US needs to keep tariffs up until trade deficits come down and American industries are rebuilt.
I suggest that we keep the negotiations fixed on that. Let them know that we have certain goals. When the trade balances are fixed, and certain industries are restored, then we can lower the tariffs.
And if they help, and buy more of our goods, then maybe we get there sooner than later.
Hopefully..., but, China plans in decades while we plan from month to month, or at most, election to election! There is NO WAY that a victory lap is in order!
Most Americans have no idea of the expansionist aspect to China with its Belt and Road initiative and their new military bases in the Pacific among other things.
No one has challenged them before.
I may be totally off base, but it seems to me we are trying to prevent a large future war and to protect freedom in the Pacific and other places.
Mohamed El Erian said weeks ago that the U.S. was going to win the trade war. Mr. El Erian is no slouch in the area of finance; he is a man to be taken seriously.
But is this all it takes to bring a meaningful amount of manufacturing back to America, or will it be more than tariffs?
This is true.
If something positive comes out of this it will be fairly small, more symbolic than substantial, but it will keep them more careful for a while.
Perhaps make them modify their strategy a bit.
What is the strategy for reducing I/P theft? Very important... As much as the annual trade deficit, maybe moreso.
What is the strategy for reducing I/P theft? Very important..
To me the single most important issue if we are going to do business with the Chinese.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what you call World Leadership.
POTUS has been the only person on the planet willing and able to take on the Chinese Juggernaut.
And he’s making them crawl.
“No one has challenged them before.”
See my #18.
Just have the chicoms write a check for the trade deficit. THEN we talk about currency devaluation and intellectual property.
