Editorial: Strong democracy needs a free press

The Boston Globe has urged newspapers across the country to publish editorials today promoting the value of a free press, and to defend it against criticisms by President Donald Trump.

It’s reasonable to ask why. It’s not news that a president of the United States doesn’t like the news media. Most presidents don’t. Thomas Jefferson, who was routinely attacked by the press of his day, once said the only truths in a newspaper were in the advertisements.

What’s disturbing today is the bitter vitriol and open contempt directed toward the news media.

Today’s actions by our press shows them to be on the same plantation. With not one major paper dissenting they made it obvious that they belong to one master.

But it’s NOT a democracy! It’s a republic. Democracies do NOT save minorities! Please get this lie out of your head!

Furthermore, senators are supposed to be appointd by state governor, who have been elected. That’s wh this country is so messed up.

Hillary should NEVER have been elected to be the Senator of New York State.

She did nothing of her promises to create jobs in upstate New York.

Lazy ass bitch. Remember the “Listening tour?”

That’s all she did. Listen. And then she did nothing.

We need more competition in the media. Today’s press operates as a cartel, hence, LEFT MEDIA CARTEL. Sort of like publishing as a team like they did the other day.

The only way to change this is to stop funding the LEFT.

Unplug from the LEFT MEDIA CARTEL.

The press has never been unbiased. Look at the history of newspapers pre-radio and tv.

The difference was there was competition in the newspaper industry. Almost every town had a liberal and conservative newspapers.

That does not exist in today’s tv press. There needs to be more competition. The entry bar is pretty high.

Lower the bar by stop funding the LEFT. Diminish the LEFT MEDIA CARTEL so that others can enter the market.

Unplug from the LEFT MEDIA CARTEL.

Excellent point! There was no dissent in a country which is usually split on issues.

The press is 100% LEFT, confirmed by themselves.

The bully pulpit is POTUS using his freedom of speech.

Like when Truman threatened to punch a journalist in the nose for criticizing his daughter’s piano playing.

The phrase “free from criticism” does not appear in the 1A.

A strong democracy needs a free press to report news, not fake stories, opinion or character assassination. The Obama leftovers and Clinton crime syndicate corruption slap normal people in the face yet it goes unreported. This has to stop even if it takes a revolution. Count me in! This is not what our founders envisioned....actually, Jefferson did and his words must be heeded.

It was during his second term in 1806 that Jefferson wrote to U.S. Rep. Barnabas Bidwell of Massachusetts, “As for what is not true you will always find abundance in the newspapers.”

The next year, Jefferson made his opinion known in a letter to John Norvell, a politician, lawyer and journalist who had written to him about plans to start his own newspaper.

“To your request of my opinion of the manner in which a newspaper should be conducted, so as to be most useful, I should answer, ‘by restraining it to true facts and sound principles only,’” Jefferson said. “Yet I fear such a paper would find few subscribers. It is a melancholy truth, that a suppression of the press could not more completely deprive the nation of it’s benefits, than is done by it’s abandoned prostitution to falsehood.

“Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle.”

These idiots do not even know that the USA is a constitutional republic not a democracy.

It is an old saying that I think goes back to the founding fathers if not earlier. It is hardly original with me.

A strong republic needs an HONEST and free press. The media are certainly free - but the honesty is missing.

What’s not free about the press? Are they not selling as many papers? Sales are not a right.
