I realise it has probably been beaten to death but Dan Quayle didn’t misspell the word.
I went to a small county school and we were taught to spell it potatoe and tomatoe.
Somewhere along the line it was dumbed down.

(I personally knew a coworker whose son had to pay a classmate black thug for going there—and the principal said he would do nothing:”We do not want a racial incident reputation in this school.”)
Then passed ahead in classes by social promotion and getting one affirmative action civil rights hire and promotion and set aside after another. Finally joining Jesse Jackson in demanding extortion money from companies who pay to get off black boycott lists and have their reputations restored as non-racist white companies as the extortionists get richer and richer.
