Probably went down something like this:

1. Hillary instructs Lanny to reach out to Cohen and take him on as a client.

2. Hillary instructs Mueller to work with Lanny to get Cohen on their side.

3. Lanny and Mueller identify the key charges they know they can make stick, and a few other salacious items that will dirty-up Trump, since there’s really nothing of substance to get him on.

4. Lanny goes to Cohen and says: “You saw what happened to Gen. Kelly, right? Bankrupt! You see what Mueller has on you with bank fraud and the taxi medallion issue? That’s a long time in jail, and you’ll be broke from the legal fees and restitution. What if I could get you off on the charges, or minimal time served at one of the white-collar, country-club prisons? And, what if I could do that without it costing you a cent for my legal representation?”

I saw Lanny Davis on various TV shows. He is still, after 25 years, the Condescending Jerk and Clinton Lackey I remember. For him to have followed the Clinton's all of these past three decades show that he is not a very good lawyer since he can't seem to make it on his own.
