Nicholas Oresko (January 18, 1917 – October 4, 2013) was a United States Army veteran and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions on 23 January 1945, during World War II.

Born on January 18, 1917, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Oresko later joined the Army from that city in March 1942. He was sent to Europe and arrived in France in September 1944, three months after the Normandy landings, as a platoon sergeant in Company C, 302nd Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division. His unit spent the next several months mopping up pockets of German soldiers who had been bypassed in the Allies' initial push through the northern part of France. In December 1944 they were redeployed to replace the 90th Infantry Division as part of Patton's 3d Army. The 94th assumed positions opposite the Westwall and the German 11th Panzer Division. On January 23, 1945, near Tettingen, Germany, Oresko, by then a master sergeant, single-handedly defeated a German bunker, was seriously wounded, and then destroyed a second bunker despite his injuries. For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor nine months later, on October 30, 1945. The medal was formally presented to him by President Harry Truman during a ceremony at the White House. Following the death of Barney F. Hajiro in January 2011, Oresko became the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient. Oresko lived in Cresskill, New Jersey. Bayonne School #14 was renamed in his honor in July 2010. Oresko died while undergoing surgery for a broken femur on October 4, 2013. He was 96 years old.

Master Sergeant Oresko's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

M/Sgt. Oresko was a platoon leader with Company C, in an attack against strong enemy positions. Deadly automatic fire from the flanks pinned down his unit. Realizing that a machine gun in a nearby bunker must be eliminated, he swiftly worked ahead alone, braving bullets which struck about him, until close enough to throw a grenade into the German position. He rushed the bunker and, with pointblank rifle fire, killed all the hostile occupants who survived the grenade blast. Another machine gun opened up on him, knocking him down and seriously wounding him in the hip. Refusing to withdraw from the battle, he placed himself at the head of his platoon to continue the assault. As withering machine gun and rifle fire swept the area, he struck out alone in advance of his men to a second bunker. With a grenade, he crippled the dug-in machine gun defending this position and then wiped out the troops manning it with his rifle, completing his second self-imposed, 1-man attack. Although weak from loss of blood, he refused to be evacuated until assured the mission was successfully accomplished. Through quick thinking, indomitable courage, and unswerving devotion to the attack in the face of bitter resistance and while wounded, M/Sgt. Oresko killed 12 Germans, prevented a delay in the assault, and made it possible for Company C to obtain its objective with minimum casualties.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

He’s a handsome ol’ feller too. Beautiful markings and coloring and I just love that face. LOL
I still have a feeling he’s going to turn into a very lovable cat once he’s tamed.

There’s no telling what it will be like up there in three weeks. It’s getting to be that time of year when the weather starts doing flip flops up north. Heck, it snowed I the Rockies close to Denver last weekend when a friend and her daughter were out there. brrrrr!

It looks like the beans are through growing now because leaves are beginning to turn yellow. We got good rainfall just in time to plump up the beans and they’re beautiful lil beans now.
Kinda makes me sad. The fields have been so gorgeous this year and it’s going to look ugly pretty soon.

I think we had -16 last winter...or the winter before. Can’t remember now.

Almost makes me sneeze thinking of the dust that will be stirred up when they harvest those beans. LOL!

Some of the trees are already beginning to get some color up there. I think the aspens turn yellow first.

Yep, harvest time gets pretty rough around here when it cranks up. It lasts a while, too, since fields are planted at different times and harvested accordingly and they’re scattered all around the county. We go through a LOT of Kleenex. LOL

The first day of autumn is less than a month away now. No surprise trees are starting to turn up north. Won’t be all that long before they start turning here. I noticed the Rose of Sharons around the yard are turning already but they start as soon as they stop blooming.

We’re looking forward to cooler temps but I’m not ready for the rest of autumn.

Y’all need to stop talking about frigid temps. Makes me want to throw on a sweater just thinking about it. LOL

Now that I’ve gotten older, I finally understand snowbirds. :-)

LOL! I told my son, who wants us to live in that frozen tundra...well, not really THAT bad....that I’d do it if I could be a reverse snowbird. Go up there when it’s warm and come back to Texas when it gets frigid.

I don’t think he was amused.

Our trees don’t lose their leaves until late November unless there is an early hard freeze. Then the leaves simply turn black and fall in a clump overnight. it’s ugly! LOL!

That sounds like a pretty good plan if you could pull it off! LOL

By late November, our trees are pretty naked. The black jack oaks hang on to their leaves through winter but they’re brown. At least there are a lot of cedars and pines so there’s green to be seen throughout winter. It helps a little.

A very pleasant good Monday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Star for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Winter here gets pretty bleak. It’s ugly to begin with, and what trees that have survived ice, drought and high winds through the past few years look even worse in the winter. Not many pines or other evergreens...no hills. Even the cactus loses color in the winter. Ugh.

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Did you and Gizmo have the lake to yourselves again or did folks show up en masse?

Well, there was a family hanging out by the pier and the boat ramp. Also, there were quite a few people out there on the golf course. Gizmo and I had a great time.

I've got to do some lawn mowing later this morning. Grass grew from last week. We'll see how the rest of the day goes.

And that’s why I could never live in the desert. It would be too depressing. Gots ta have a lot of greenery, even if it means allergies. LOL

I hear ya. But even tumbleweeds cause allergies. Ugh. And sand. It’s way prettier where you are!
