McCain: The Most Reprehensible of the Keating Five [1989 opinion]
The Phoenix New imes ^ | 11/29/1989 | Tomas Fitzpatrick

Posted on 08/27/2018 6:16:07 AM PDT by advance_copy

You're John McCain, a fallen hero who wanted to become president so desperately that you sold yourself to Charlie Keating, the wealthy con man who bears such an incredible resemblance to The Joker.

Obviously, Keating thought you could make it to the White House, too.

He poured $112,000 into your political campaigns. He became your friend. He threw fund raisers in your honor. He even made a sweet shopping-center investment deal for your wife, Cindy. Your father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was cut in on the deal, too.

Nothing was too good for you. Why not? Keating saw you as a prime investment that would pay off in the future.

[Snip]

So what if he gave you $112,000? Just keep smiling at the cameras and saying you did nothing wrong.

Maybe the voters will understand you took those tiring trips to Charlie's place in the Bahamas in their behalf. Certainly, they can understand you wanted to take your family along. A senator deserves to travel on private jets, removed from the awful crush of public transportation.

You sought out a master criminal like Keating and became his friend. Now you've discarded him. It shouldn't be surprising that you are now in the process of selling out your senatorial accomplices.

You're John McCain, clearly the guiltiest, most culpable and reprehensible of the Keating Five. But you know the power of television and you realize this is the only way you can possibly save your political career.

I disagree.

He’s permanently pickled now... he just doesn’t drive much anymore.

“From what I’ve gathered..I’d have fraked the guy”

I believe the term you are looking for is ‘fragged’.

‘Frak’ has a much different connotation... particularly among certain science-fiction fans.

Just a heads-up.

Yeah...you are right...I was thinking fast...

But yeah...I would have fragged the ass-hole. And I think he got fragged...by his own guys.

I think you are right about Kerry’s wounds. Probably got hit by a shell casing or a bottle of catsup or both. The second wound may have occurred when he fell out of his boat to swim for help.

As far as fragging goes, he was probably in and out before anyone knew he was there on a secret mission. It was Christmas eve wasn’t it? No one was paying much attention. In fact, no one really recalls (or gives a damn) he was ever in Vietnam.

My apologies if I have doubted some of the media’s favoritism of the “facts”. Some say he was the best/worst Secretary of State since Hillary Clinton. It’s a hard choice, but you decide. (Don’t be confused if Madalyn Albright is also mentioned in the same breath. To be sure, she was the ugliest, but not the worst of the bunch.)

BTW, wasn’t he the cyclist that fell off his bicycle and broke his leg over in the French Alps while day dreaming about the Tour de France when he should have been taking care of business?

I could go on about John Kerry’s war record and his tenure as Secretary of State but it would be to no avail. No one really cares. I know I don’t. Now if I could just quit thinking about “catsup” every time I hear the name “Kerry”...

Rules for a Congressperson:

Half staff for the day of the death & for ONE full day following. NOT ONE MINUTE MORE is required. It went back up to full staff at MIDNIGHT.

Thank you for the links.

The Lew Rockwell story you linked has been debunked multiple times on FR, mostly by people who were there. Look here, there are also a lot of links to the Forrestal fire as well:

As for the Rolling Stone article, I find that rather believable. It does lend perspective. I will have to look up writings from his fellow PoWs. Best to find original source material.

I kinda think Erich Hartmann’s view on Soviet captivity has some weight to it, as far as McCain’s stay in the Hanoi Hilton. He is supposed to have said:

“Only those who have experienced Soviet captivity are eligible to valid opinons concerning it.”
