I found this very clear explanation of the USS Forrestal incident. I do not aim to dis McCain. I'm just flabbergasted at how the press today is acting like Lincoln died, and in 2008, they were a little more interested in verifiable truth. It's pretty long, but well worth the truth. (Tip: McCain didn't help clean up the mess onboard after a missle "fell" (which is explained as not possible) off his plane, contributing the the disaster....and then he flew off to Saigon for R&R and requested a transfer...and missed the onboard memorial of the 161 dead shipmates)

FReeper dunblak was on the Forrestal during the fire.

More proof that the only thing John McCain EVER cared about was John McCain.

There is a documentary by Discover channel, must be at least 20 years ago
McCain sits on stool and explains he thought it was best to stay below and shake the hands of the boys rather than go up top and fight to save the ship.
Many rolled out of bunks in nothing but boxers and bare feet
McCain chose to shake hands below while wearing a nomex flight suit and boots.

That interview sealed my opinion of him

Sorry some of that is not true. This has been debunked here on FR within the last 2 or 3 years in detail.

That missile did not come from McCain’s plane and he wasn’t trying to wet start his plane. That missile was an accident nothing more.

Now it is true McCain was shipped out right after the incident probably more due to the fact he was so despised by the officers and crew and his CO just used this accident as a excuse to transfer him out.

Mary Hershberger is a historian, professor of history at Capital University and author of “Jane Fonda's War” and other books. She is a recipient of the Binkley-Stephenson award, given annually for the best scholarly article in the Journal of American History.

That is the author of this leftist propaganda that was begun during the 2008 election. Published August 26, 2008. Still doesn't beat the Aug. 3rd date of the video I posted a link to. After hours of searching that video was the earliest ever mention of "Wet Start Johnny" I could find on the internet.

Yeah, this is one of several ‘issues’ with the idea that he is an out and out military hero.

However, it is widely reported that he could have been released early but choose to stay in Hanoi as he didn’t want special treatment.

Anyone able to explain why he did that if not for heroic reasons?

His father and grandfather were Admirals and yet he graduated very close to the bottom of his class at the Academy. And his character and respectability went downhill from there.

This article is not about the supposed wet start some here are discussing, but a different scenario. The article says that the missile fired accidentally and hit the plane next to McCain, and also that it knocked two bombs off McCain’s plane.

Some claim that there was no evidence that the missile knocked bombs off McCain’s plane, but that it had to have been “pilot error”, or McCain somehow hit the controls to detach the bombs as he escaped from his plane.

And it was supposedly those bombs that started the worst of the conflagration aboard the Forrestal.

Some of the story is okay...lots of it is conjecture - and some ignores reality.

The deck film shows a Zuni Rocket streaking across the deck and hitting either the plane beside McCain...or affecting McCain’s plane. The film shows McCain climbing out of the cockpit and jumping to the deck ....and getting away.

I doubt the story’s line that McCain could have activated 2 switches and dropped bombs on the deck. Navy weapons designs include LOTS of safeties - like maybe the plane has to be in the air, wheels up...etc. (I am a former submariner - and I can explain the myriad safeties integrated into the torpedo system and the fire control system to prevent any bad things happening.

AND - the ‘smear’ that McCain went below decks and didn’t stay to fight fires.....WELL - that is a bit absurd - since an Aircraft Carrier has a ‘ships force’ crew and an Air Wing Crew. McCain - part of the Air Wing. Ships Force - would have plenty of damage control personnel - all trained in damage control, fighting fires, etc. McCain might have been more in the way than a valued team member who knew how the team fought fires and how he would properly aid and assist in the training.

AND - McCain - after recovery from the accident, deferred being sent home....but went to another aircraft carrier and returned to flight status and resumed combat missions. That wasn’t mentioned in the article - instead sleazily suggesting he was somehow avoiding it.

Overall - the article is more accurate than many sleazy articles...but it still misses the mark.

Please stop this crap. McCain was a brave warrior but admittedly not the best pilot. He acquitted himself with honor as a pilot and POW. As the son of the commmander of the Pacific fleet he was singled out for particular brutal treatment by his captors.

If you want to criticize McCain talk about his politics which were not good.

I despise John McCain as much as anyone but to try and blame the USS Forrestal incident on him is wrong.
