It happened Saturday night when a Chevy Suburban driven by Cara Selby broke down just a block away from her home in Cortland, Indiana, officials said.

Selby was throwing a slumber party for her daughter. When the teens at the sleepover came out to help push Selby’s car back home, another vehicle hit them from behind, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said.

Killed were: Nevaeh Law, 14; Jenna A. Helton, 14; Brittany Watson, 15; and Martin Martinez, 16. Four others were hurt, including Selby’s daughter.

The crash is still under investigation and the driver of the SUV — a 24-year-old woman — hasn’t yet been charged

The group of kids were completely covering the back of the car. The approaching driver did not see them or the vehicle at all.

Oh yeaaaahhhhh I enjoy trying to AVOID getting SIDE-SWIPED out of my lane while going 75mph on one of the busiest freeways IN THE ENTIRE WORLD with two wobbly SUV's on each side of me..

Even better? You park your sedan carefully in the parking space at the supermarket, then along comes a BIG FAT TOYOTA SEQUOIA. Their doors swing open and DENT your car because their SUV is SO FAT there's not even enough space for them to get out of their vehicle without DENTING your car!!!

SUV's are destructive to other vehicles in parking spaces, let alone they love to FLIP during accidents because their center of gravity is too high.

Most of them get CRAPPY gas mileage and often times are DRIVEN WITH A SINGLE OCCUPANT. WHY HAVE AN SUV FOR THAT???

AND THEY'RE UGLY TO BOOT!!!

Read an article on this earlier, absolutely horrible accident. Some of the comments here are as dumb as some of the ones under the article.

Well it was dark. We don’t know the details as far as lighting and such so we don’t know if the SUV driver could have seen them in time.

But the kids doing the pushing should have cleared the road as soon as the headlights of the SUV became visible. It called common sense and self preservation. Many kids today are never taught such a thing.

Anyone else notice this was a mixed sex sleepover?

Or not. Take a close look at a photo of Martin.

I sometimes lament the size of my Suburban. I just wish it were bigger. I loved cars and hated SUVs as well. I lived in CT and there the roads are far too tight, no one uses them for anything big and they just junk them up. Then I got a Yukon. I liked it. It wasn't too big, only slightly larger than a Jeep Cherokee in all dimensions. So I bought it. fell in LOVE. After driving it for awhile and getting to do all the things I could do with it (A survival vehicle for the family, for instance. Strong and easy to repair, reliable as all get-out and commonly seen with over 250,000 miles on them). I sold it and went for the Suburban. Then I saw this guy. This guy walked away from this accident without injury. He actually posts on one of the forums and can confirm everything. He's not in a suburban or tahoe, he's in an extended cab GMT800 truck.

Well, not every one lives in a city with dog walkers and pet therapist. SUV’s and Pickups can go places a car can not. They can carry more and tow more. They are very utilitarian. Huh, maybe that is why they call them sport UTILITY vehicles. There are places in this great country where they are very much needed. And I now drive a Ram 1500 crew cab. So I usually park at the far end of the parking lot. Not so much to protect all the mini-coopers and prius’ out there, but to protect my truck from all the snowflakes that want to key it because of my MAGA sticker.

Well many you need to drive your Penis, er, Prius better and park better. Then you won’t have all these problems with SUV’s.

Got a news flash for ya sweetheart; SUV’s are here to stay for the foreseeable future. Some manufacturers are dropping car models to focus on making more SUV’s because that’s what is selling.

Methinks you will be living in SUV hell for the rest of your days.

Now days, for some carriers, if you brake hard you get dinged by your insurance rates. Maybe the driver that hit them was scared of higher insurance rates. An accident will increase them much more however.

Sad. It is dangerous being behind a car on the side of the road. Even a minor tap can cause loss of both legs.

Sounds like the kids pushing the car may have been obstructing the driver’s view of the tail lights and/or hazards.

“Oversize, FUGLY SUV’s make the killin’ BIGGER when it happens.
God I HATE SUV’s. HATE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

You need a psychiatrist! Hating a motor vehicle is just loony! You’re probably the clown in the Prius driving 45 in the fast lane on the freeway! I don’t hate clown cars, but I do hate their drivers!

We can armchair quarterback till the cows come home but it won't change a thing. Who knows; maybe the kids were all talking (bitching) about having to push the car and just got lost in their own heads.

We could ask how someone didn't see them from a distance far enough to avoid hitting them. Didn't any of the kids have white pants, shirts, or shoes on? At this point all we have are questions, 4 dead kids, and 4 grieving families. Tragic.

That’s right. And if something happens to my family, I demand the same results.

I put my daughter’s seat in the middle of the middle seat because I want her to be as far in as possible. In the CRV nothing but a few inches of flimsy blocks her.

the large SUV thing goes beyond the safety thing though. Smart cars are safe as hell. What I love about the truck is it’s ability to do everything. I never say “No” when that truck is near. It’s the ultimate adventure vehicle and I feel helpless unless it’s on-hand.

I like Priuseseses.

They are neat. They pollute like crazy but they are smooth and oddly calming to drive.

The new ones are ugly as sin though. Yeah, I know you just got done talking about this but the new ones break the mold.

And she hasn’t been charged yet?

Betcha she was on her cell phone or texting someone.

Although, maybe they are contacting her carrier to determine if the cell phone was in use at the time of the accident.
