OTTAWA — Shortly after his election in late 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared “Canada is back,” promising a renewed Canadian presence on the world stage.
Trudeau has taken political hits since then for minor lapses, such as a luxury family holiday visit to a Caribbean island and an ill-fated trip to India, but his biggest challenge, just a year before Canadians go to the polls, has come from the leader of Canada’s longtime military ally and economic partner.
Now, Canadians worried that their government has been sidelined in crucial trade talks and may be forced to back down on important economic issues, having been outmaneuvered by President Trump and possibly sold out by an erstwhile Mexican ally.
Several rounds of tense discussions about the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) culminated Monday in a trade pact that excluded Canada, prompting Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland to cut short a trip to Europe and dash to Washington for the first trilateral trade talks with the United States and Mexico in five weeks.

Late 60s-early 70s I was stationed as a CAF Radar Technician in northern Ontario watching for missiles coming in over the pole.
Those missiles primary targets would have been in the US.
Perhaps satellites have now taken over some of that function but it appears radar stations still play a role.

Oil, natural gas, Ford Pickups and auto parts, potash, aircraft & parts, gold & lumber are the biggest imports in order according to a search I just did on the Google.
Most of the oil goes to the west coast refineries. The Keystone pipeline was all about reducing the cost of bringing Albert heavy crude oil to the refineries in LA & TX that have excess capacity to refine this type of crude oil. I personally would rather buy Canadian oil than Venezuela or Saudi Arabia, etc. Same with natural gas.
I think most Ford F series trucks are made in Windsor, ONT.
I drive a Tacoma made in San Antonio.
Apparently, most of the potassium chloride(potash) we use in the country for fertilizer comes from Saskatchewan.
Bombardier makes a lot of commuter airplanes. Small jets and turboprops. I think they also make skidoos, atvs, etc.
We import a lot of Canadian softwood lumber. As a lumber broker I can attest to that.

If Canada had negotiated in good faith, that would have happened. But they chose to try and screw over Trump. Right now there are no more win/win choices left for Canada. The options are 1. Give up 1 million autos a year capacity manufacturing to Mexico/ US, or 2. Give up the subsidized dairy industry.
I said “need”. None of those things are unavailable in the US. Liberal politics has driven our buying from Canada. Now that we have a man in the whitehouse, we can get back to America First! America Wins! and not some lame-assed country like Canada.

Ours is readily available. No need to think that there is a finite supply.
We have more trees planted now by wood companies than there existed in 1800. We’ve found and are continuing to find more and more coal, and natural gas.
Regardless of the ignorance of the liberals who claim natural resources are ending, nothing could be further from the truth.

Liberal politics have not. It is called capitalism. Almost all of these products: oil, natural gas, gold, lumber, potash are COMMODITIES. We are buying them from Canada because they deliver to the US CHEAPER than the same product either made in the US or some or world producer.
For example, do you think Scotts fertilizer would pay MORE to get potash from Canada if they could buy it cheaper delivered to their fertilizer factory from some other producer in India, China, or the US.
I am a wholesale lumber broker.I buy lumber from Canada, Europe and the US. I sell into the US. I just sold a truck of lumber into Idaho. I bought it from a sawmill in BC. I could have bought the exact same product(2x10 Select Structural Douglas Fir) from a mill in Oregon. The Canadian lumber was $595/thousand board feet delivered to northern Idaho. The same product from Oregon was $645/mbf delivered. This includes the 20% duty on the Canadian lumber. My customer chose to buy the lumber from Canada. IF the Oregon mill was cheaper, he would have bought that.
Millions of transactions like this happen everyday in our economy.

Now ask yourself why do we do that?
We don’t do it because Canada has some magic fairy dust that allows them to.
We do it because liberal politics, including the EPA, either forbids us from doing it or causes such expensive regulations and taxes that it is cheaper to get it someplace else. Often, liberal do these things so we have to go overseas. They desire to hurt America.
Trump is working on removing those burdensome regulations and taxes so that America is viable again.

You can’t possibly claim that transporting products from Canada should ever be cheaper than having them right here at home. That’s just idiocy that defies common sense.

I notice Ms. Freeland, their lead trade negotiator for NAFTA, is a former journalist. I kind of like that background as a matchup to Trump's Wilbur Ross, the billionaire tycoon who bought, saved, and sold US Steel many years ago..
Wonder which of those two will negotiate the better deal for their country?

I will speak from my knowledge as a lumber broker.
The type of lumber sold in your region differs from other areas of the US. I sell many different roof truss manufactures around the US.
The 2x10 Douglas Fir I spoke about in my previous post went into Coeur D’Alene, ID. That customer buys only Douglas Fir and Fir/larch that comes from ID, OR, WA, MT & BC.
I sell multiple truss plants in Texas. They all buy Southern Yellow Pine that comes from sawmills in TX, AR, LA & MS.
I sell one in Rochester, NY. His lumber typically comes from PQ, ME, NB, ON, NC, SC, GA & AR. It is a mix of Eastern SPF out of Canada and SYP out of the US.
I sell one in Phoenix that buys both Douglas Fir and SPF. It typically comes from CA, OR, WA, BC, ID.
SO, what type of lumber people use has more to do with the cost of the freight to deliver it to where the end user is located. Lumber is a very competitive commodity with very little mark up in price.
