The Nike board knew exactly what it was doing. It understands its core customer base. Its not Trump supporters who will spend $300 on a pair of shoes made of rubber, plastic and canvas.

Untrue. I am one of their core base and I am a Trump supporter and quit watching NFL games the second that more players than Colin took to their knees.

The day Nike announced their support of Colin and his organization, I went and bought a pairs of Adidas that came close to $300.

Not only did Nike NOT get my business. A competitor did and will continue to. That's the beauty of capitalism.

Also Adidas was on the ball enough to know that day and the following ones were going to be heaven for them and their brand. As a proven purchaser of athletic shoes, Adidas sent me several email advertisements the day of Nike's announcement. Brilliant move. Suddenly I wanted to purchase athletic shoes.

Adidas was the only shoe company sending out their emails. Just goes to show how on the ball they are.

Yes, those who suggest Nike made some kind of misguided mistake are merely exposing their own terrible ignorance. (Or, are completely cognizant, but they gotta create that click bait content.) It will might be a huge marketing mistake, but it was one which was carefully considered by very experienced and seasoned professionals.

Ultimately, it's really about the billions of young people overseas markets: S American, India & China. If they can increase brand identity to personalize supposed activism against the US and/or authority, it's well worth pissing off mere 150m Americans. As a two-fer, the very people who are reacting against the ad (middle class white Americans) are the very source of disdain any youth marketing campaign would be pointing to for their new customers to "rebel" against.

Genius, actually. Of course, we'll see if the strategy works; there are never any guarantees even for the best laid plans of mice & men.

I agree with you. It’s become obvious that Nike doesn’t want mainstream white folks wearing their gear. I’d think that creates an even worse problem for the NFL than it already had.
