SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The offices of the Onondaga County District Attorney and the state Inspector General are investigating SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said his office is working closely with state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott.

He would not say what specific issues the investigation is focusing on.

"I don't have a time frame, but I like to move things along expeditiously," he said.

Upstate has been embroiled in controversy in recent months over a $660,500 severance agreement with its former hospital CEO and the departure of a senior vice president who quit after news stories revealed he lied about his past during a speech on campus last year.

Upstate paid $660,500 to Dr. John McCabe, its former hospital CEO, for a 14-month off-campus assignment that involved no work, according to documents obtained by syracuse.com.

KEYWORDS: corruption; upstate
I'm on the voluntary faculty at Upstate, meaning I teach pro bono. The corruption and administrative incompetence is breathtaking. But this is to be expected from an organ of the most corrupt state government in the country.

Odd how Upstate was the level 1 trauma center for the area and is now a mess.

“Upstate paid $660,500 to Dr. John McCabe, its former hospital CEO”

As a SUNY ESF class of 1985 alumni, all I have to say about this is GO ORANGEMAN.

Yes, we were. We also paid about 1/4 the tuition y’all did.
:0

I took all my marketing courses at SU. NY state paid the difference in tuition. We also took elective courses like photography because the state would pay the lab fee.
I remember taking Scuba Diving in my senior year. I did my pool dive in the building next to the Dome. I did my open water dive at Skaneateles Lake. The State of New York paid my $400 scuba diving lab fee as part of their deal with SU.

I also worked at the Carrier Dome in events production. We would set up the tailgate for football games. We also set up for all concerts and other Dome events. I started by setting up chairs on the dome floor for concerts. I finished my senior year as a team leader. It was a fun job. I got to meet Prince, Bruce Springsteen, lots of football and basketball players. It was the best $5/hour job I ever had(1985).

I was there the same time as you but class of 86. My program, Industrial Design, was in the pool building you mention. The next year they e1qmptied the pool and then a few years later tore that building down. I also worked at Carrier Dome for concessions. It was a fun job. I worked in residential security and proctor exams. I remember those concerts you mention and got to see Pink Floyd. Remember Vanessa Williams was chosen Miss America? Those were some good times.

I never saw Pink Floyd. I saw The Who and The Rolling Stones there but I was going to SUNY Morrisville at the time. At the time(84-85) SUNY ESF was a Junior, Senior and Graduate School only. I saw The Grateful Dead at least twice. I worked one of the dead shows. We used to hire the SU football team for security to stand in front of the stage.

Bruce Springsteen seemed like a regular guy. Except he was about 5’7” and 140 pounds. However, he came out and introduced himself to everybody. He shook everyones hand. His girlfriend at the time was some pretty B list TV actress. She wanted nothing to do with us. She was very standoffish. That weekend me and another guy got paid to SLEEP on the stage in the dome just guard their instruments.
I still have his harmonica. The other guy got Bruce’s hand written song/set list.

Prince was maybe 5’ tall. He wore 6” platform shoes. His big mean looking body guards would not let us get near him. He never said a thing. We were more interested in Sheila E. She was one of his back up singers that had one hit. She was smoking hot though.

When we set up for the Grateful Dead, we would set up one locker room for Jerry. The other locker room for the rest of the band. In Jerry’s room we set up a folding chair, card table and a lamp. Nothing else. we figured he was in there shootin Heroin. Most of the other bands had specific lists of items that were required in their “green room” prior to the show. Most were certain brands like Coke , no Pepsi because they were sponsoring the tour.

I lived my junior year in those terrible 2 bedroom concrete boxes on south campus we called Sky box. Concrete floors, walls and ceilings. Industrial carpet and industrial furniture. My Senior year, me and another 5 Stumpies rented a 6 bedroom dump out on Fellows Ave. That was out Euclid Ave about 10 blocks from campus. We rode bikes, took the bus and senior year I had my Kawasaki KZ650.

I remember we had a Boy Scout masters dinner at the dome once. They served prime rib to 2500 people. For the next week I ate leftover prime rib every night. It sure beat generic macaroni and cheese 5 for a buck , limit 10 per customer.

Remember Venessa Williams. We (pretty much every other male on campus) had her Penthouse picture on the refridgerator in the kitchen of our house senior year.

I also remember Matt’s Beer balls. The plastic about 16” diameter ball full of beer. It was about 2 cases worth.

I also remember Friday nights at the Magnolia Café inside the little mall off Marshall Street. They would sell you a 60 oz fishbowl full of beer. You had to give them your license. By 8 o’clock the floor was covered with beer. I remember the bathrooms were disgusting by 7 o’clock.

OMG, M Street! I remember Friday nights at the Magnolia. Also the Rathskeller I believe it was called. Remember the “spare change” guy who was a fixture there? “Spare change? You got any spare change?” Also that old bicycle painted all white that would show up in random places. I lived in the basement of a big old dumpy house on Comstock Ave. A friend of mine was the actual Orange mascot. I remember the horrible day when the space shuttle blew up.

I am not sure I ever went into the Rathskeller more than once or twice. It was always too dark and creepy.

There were so many dumpy rental houses. Ours had a second floor porch we would seriously not let more than 4 people out on at any time. I remember looking at one rental house that had a toilet in the middle of the living room that actually worked.

The guy who owned our rental house also owned a couple furniture stores in the area. He was rich, but he was also a slum lord. Our house was furnished with some pretty good quality older furniture. I remember we ran out of oil for the furnace in the middle of winter because we were too poor to buy it. The house got about 50 degrees inside on the first floor.
