Workers at Whole Foods are looking to unionize after rumors parent company Amazon are planning mass layoffs in an order to reduce costs.

It's not the first time Whole Foods workers have tried to organize themselves but it is the first attempt since Amazon bough the company.

The email reveals strains between managers and lower-level employees at the supermarket chain.

'Over the past year, layoffs and the consolidations of store-level positions at Whole Foods Market have upset the livelihood of team members, stirred, anxiety, and lowered moral [sic] within stores,' the email states.

It alleges Whole Foods CEO John Mackey sold the store to Amazon 'with an agreement to trim hundreds of millions of dollars of labor from our stores.'

What if Amazon wants to see strikes.

Then, they can close the Whole Paycheck stores and convert them to warehouses to compete with Costco.

We will be able to order on line, get free delivery for orders over $50 and never have to go shopping at Costco or where ever for your food.

You will then be able to buy in bulk or a week of food for two, that is ready to microwave or pop in the oven. Or buy and serve a complete multi course meal for several guests ready to microwave or pop into your oven.

no one should expect to get roadside(or even all) veggies or fruits year round - all produce is seasonal likely for reasons and we just over ride that by shipping it all over the globe creating the expectation we can have what we want whenever.

Well that's what makes our modern day society so great. We CAN expect to have any kind of produce year-round through the wonders of logistics and technology. And the common person can have this today whereas in earlier eras even kings and emperors could only dream about it.

This is to be CELEBRATED, not scorned.

You’re why prices are so high. Unions won’t protect you from losing your job during down sizing.

I’ve heard that is exactly what they plan to do. They want more warehouses and shipment centers so that the Amazon goods can get out faster to people’s homes.

The last time I was in a Whole Foods joint was about 20 years ago with the woman I was going out with.I was already wary of the whole “organic” thing but when I saw ordinary,run-of-the-mill chicken breast for $10 a pound I knew I wouldn’t be back.Of course at that time chicken breast could be found at Stop & Shop for about $3 a pound.

I saw a piece in the MIT student paper/magazine some time ago by a student who had visited one in her home town during summer break.

It was a bit long winded but she made some excellent observations. Her final conclusion after that, her first visit to the chain, was that shopping at Whole Foods wasn't about health,it was an open display of conspicuous wealth.

I'm strongly inclined to agree.

While Bezos, or whoever, may have figured out some genius logistical ways to get us stuff, within a day or two, he’s nothing more than a corporate raider, Wall St type, hypocritical liberal. Pays his folks peanuts because he knows he can find workers. Worth stupid money and yet demands that they public pay him to so that he can grace some locale with a HQ, the promise of high paying jobs that will all go to liberal, hipster, techie’s that have no desire to assimilate anywhere other than the confines of their uber white, liberal hipster neighborhoods.

Yet, the Left fawns over him when he represents everything that they supposedly hate about corporate America.

The mcDonalds we went to last week for coffee and breakfast had ONE cashier and TWO kiosks. The cashier was there mainly to take payments. Wait until the kiosks come equipped with change makers and credit card readers. Pretty soon, no more cashiers, no more cooks, no more workers to fill and bag orders, or stock the shelves, clean floors and restrooms as robots will do that. No more entry level positions, no more paychecks, no more college reimbursement incentives, no benefits at all. All because of demands for higher wages largely instigated by politicians and social justice warriors who have the little guy’s best interests at heart.

I spent a year at the WFC corporate office in Austin. It’s a low key circus where nothing gets done. I was called “grandpa” by the team that I managed and I took it all in stride since I called them whining, spoiled children.

I took over three projects that would take about four months to complete. In month 10, I still couldn’t get a VP, 20 years my junior to make a decision on which color floor tiles to get for the store. I told him there was a standard since pretty much every store is built the same, using the same vendors. He wouldn’t believe it.

Every week, my status meeting was cancelled because of things like skateboard slalom in the aisles or who’s bike is the best decorated. After 10 months of status reports highlighting this and other items I could complete with a phone call, I was finally called into a senior staff meeting to explain why activities were six months behind schedule.

After being berated by someone half my age and with no clue, in front of a room full of directors and other meaningless titles, I said my piece.

“I’m six months behind schedule because the idiot who is the equivalent of a VP cannot make up his F’ing mind on what color he wants the floor tiles to be. They are all the same! And then apparently none of you bothered to read my status reports or would accept meetings from me even though I am telling you what the heck is going on. And to top it all off, why am I the first person in the office at 07:00 and the last to leave at 16:00? Doesn’t anyone work?”

I was thanked by someone ( because we have to give kudos at the end of a meeting) and went back to my desk to finish up the day. I stayed there for two additional months with no one talking to me. It gave be time to update my resume. Once I hit a year I left.

Magic? I don’t know. But it was different, it is changing, and it may lose much of its original customer base.

WF did try to be selective with its suppliers. They bought produce as locally as possible, and from farms that had reputations for high quality. Now, they’re bringing crap from anywhere, and it makes a difference. “Organic” and “sustainable” might have been buzzwords to attract leftards, but the bottom line is the quality of the meat, the produce, etc., exceeded that of other chains nearby.

WF did staff at a level above what competitors staffed at. There was the guy who took the produce off the truck from the wholesaler, and then carefully went through each piece of produce, picking out the bad ones, and leaving only the good ones for display at full price. Full price was higher than at Safeway or Giant, or even Trader Joe’s, but it meant when you got home with your purchase, finding a “bad apple” (or rotten tomato, or funky leaves on the inside of a head of lettuce) was very rare. Now, without that guy, who’d had years in the produce business, produce from WF is as suspect as from the other big chains.

Then, there was the guy took the produce that wasn’t good enough for selling whole at full price, they’d go through it carefully, and cut off bad parts, saving the good parts, and putting the good chunks into plastic containers as ready-to-eat cut up produce. Somewhat more expensive than the whole fruit on display, but considering the quality of the initial product, and the convenience of having it pre-cut, it could be worth it. Now, they buy pre-cut produce from wholesalers whose original sources are perhaps not as attentive to quality. So, WF is experiencing the same sort of food-borne illness incidents as other national chains.

This loss of quality matters to me personally. I have to take immunosuppressant drugs, and I’m very vulnerable to food-borne illnesses. Previously, WF was a pretty reliable source for me. Now, a lot less.

This problem with cutting quality to save money is afflicting the entire operation. At the same time as the quality drops to standards similar to other chain supermarkets, the prices are still generally higher than elsewhere.

It’s a disappointment to me, as I live across a side street from a large WF that had been, before Amazon swallowed them, a purveyor of food that was often fresher, and higher quality than what’s typically available elsewhere. The service also met a higher standard, with more knowledgeable, more accessible department managers, cheerful cashiers, and motivated floor staff.

But Bozos doesn’t care about any of that. He’s deconstructing a profitable business in the hopes of using some of the parts in different ways to make even more money.

My wife has never darkened the door at a Whole Foods. She hates trendy and superficial places like that.

Bless her, she also hates the over the top consumerism of shopping malls, as do I.

There’s a large mall not far from us. I think I’ve been inside three times since we moved here ten years ago.

Most New Englanders don’t buy tomatoes in Winter, period.
Our seasonals are out of this world!
If I want a tomato in February, I will go somewhere warm and sunny! :)

"...but have heard that supermarket chains have very narrow profit margins, on the order of 1 or 2 cents on the dollar of gross sales."

This is the big lie they want everyone to believe. Supermarkets calculate their profit margins after paying out huge bonuses to upper management. Then they cry about their slim margins.
