Trump tells Apple to make products in U.S. to avoid China tariffs

U.S. President Trump tweeted on Saturday that Apple Inc (AAPL.O) should make products inside the United States if it wants to avoid tariffs on Chinese imports.

The company told trade officials in a letter on Friday that the proposed tariffs would affect prices for a “wide range” of Apple products, including its Watch, but it did not mention the iPhone.

Trump, speaking on Friday aboard Air Force One, said the administration had tariffs planned for an additional $267 billion worth of Chinese goods.

Trump tweeted that “Apple prices may increase because of the massive Tariffs we may be imposing on China - but there is an easy solution where there would be ZERO tax, and indeed a tax incentive. Make your products in the United States instead of China. Start building new plants now.”(continued)

Doesn’t Samsung produce 50% of their phones in Vietnam?

And are cutting their production in China?

Samsung can send phones from Vietnam to the USA and avoid the China tariffs?

Am I wrong on this???

Actually, 50% of Samsung phones are made in Vietnam.

Those phones will not be subject to tariffs on China.

This keeps pressure on Apple to eat any tariff costs and not raise prices.

“Why should they? The same tariff that hits them will also hit their competition so it’s not like this places them at a disadvantage. “

Samsung produces 50% of their phones in Vietnam. Samsung can ship those phones to the US and not pay any tariffs. This puts Apple in a bind.

I get the point that you are trying to make... Apple good... Samsung bad. But, if you dig just a little deeper into the links that you provided and the Google search that you suggested the picture that comes into focus is completely different than what you intend.

For instance the article that you linked to from China Daily, “Samsung to focus on advanced manufacturing in China” from July 2016 states that Samsung intended to invest $240 million on factories in China. While the Google search you suggested comes up with a Reuters story from July of 2017 that said that Samsung was investing $18.6 BILLION on South Korea to “extend its lead in memory chips and next-generation smartphone displays, in a plan that promises to create almost half a million jobs.” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-chips/samsung-plans-18-6-billion-south-korea-investment-to-widen-chip-lead-idUSKBN19P06T

So yes Samsung has large investments in China. But from these two articles from your link and your suggestion... Samsung has just invested $18.6 Billion in South Korea investments vs $240 Million in China. This favors South Korean investments by 77.5 to 1 and does not support your Apple fan boy contention that “Most of Samsung’s products are made in China by Samsung owned factories.”

I am sorry but the other article you linked to: An Investigation of Eight Samsung Factories in China, Is Samsung Infringing Upon Apple’s Patent to Bully Workers? from the headline on down also does not do a very good job of making your point... Apple good... Samsung bad. The truth is I really do not care. Samsung is a South Korean based multinational which INDESPUTABLY invests vastly more of its capital expenditures in South Korea than in other countries. Apple is an American company now worth over $1 Trillion dollars which INDESPUTABLY invests vastly more of its capital expenditures OUTSIDE of America than in America.

Wouldn't it be something if Apple decided to invest $18.6 Billion dollars in America and create half a million jobs in here? Well I wouldn't hold my breath, history shows that patriotism has not been something important to Apple or very many of their their customers.

Trying to divert the negative perception of Apple for doing this by pointing the finger at Samsung is farcical at best and makes you sound like a fool. President Trump rightly pointed the finger at Apple... they are the perfect example of an American company that has outsourced almost all of their production and jobs to other countries. Their policies have truly been despicable. And you trying to mislead others about this is truly despicable as well.

It’s a voluntary tax, just like the lottery.

Apple can get around it by producing in the US. If it doesn’t think it is worth it to evade the tax, US citizens can pay the tax and feed the Treasury; which will increase tax receipts and allow lowering of other taxes.

It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

Foxconn manufactures phones and components for Apple. While they currently assemble most of the phones in China, Foxconn could shift the assembly to Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, or South Korea.

a/ they have completely deplatformed AlexJones while leaving Anti-American anti semites like Louis Farrakhan on iTunes.
b/ they took down 25,000 Chinese apps at the request of the communist Chinese govt.
c/ they gave the communist Chinese govt the backdoor keys to the Apple cloud in China, effectively giving the Chinese govt extra tools to spy on over 200,000,000 Chinese.
Tim Cook of Apple is a traitor to freedom and to America. STARVE APPLE do not buy new Apple products till he is gone/their policies change.

Thank you! Apple has been and continues to be a disgrace in almost every possible way.

That’s what I want! Production shipped out of China. Best yet, is some of that production to come back to the US.

Brilliant! Somehow even an Apple fanboy has been able to figured out the gist of what President Trump is trying to communicate to China. They can either play fair or suffer the consequences. President Trump is not targeting Apple; President Trump is targeting China and trying to get them to open their markets to goods made in America.

Actually, the phones are assembled in Vietnam from parts mostly made elsewhere. That is a pretty big distinction.

Prices will just go up to reflect the tariff.

iPhone prices in China are 28% higher than USA prices because of Chinese tariffs and other taxes. Does Apple ever complain about those tariffs? Trump is trying to end their unfair trade practices. Apple should want him to succeed.

Where the iPhone 8 is cheapest and most expensive

“And you trying to mislead others about this is truly despicable as well.”

There you go with the insults. A mark of someone being hypocritical and trying to mislead others, shameful of you. I said you should google about Samsung’s investments in China. The single link that I previously posted is a mere blip in the investments of Samsung in China, yet you refer to the money they invested for some factories that year ($240 million) as if it is their total investment, not so.

Samsung directly employs thousands of Chinese workers in those factories, Apple employs none, yet you ignore that fact. And, Samsung also was employing North Koreans in some of their Chinese factories. President Trump signed an executive order last year forbidding imports made from North Koreans, so Samsung had to scramble in order to be in compliance. Apple does not rely solely on iphones assembled in China; they’ve made them in Brazil, India and other places. They can be assembled anywhere, and Apple is ramping up to try to assemble them in Wisconsin. They did so in Brazil for some years but scaled back due to problems there. Here’s a link about them ramping up to assemble in India.

https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/apple-starts-selling-made-in-india-iphone-se-978529-2017-05-22

Here is another older link about how the iphone is an American phone, despite being assembled in China. You won’t find a description about Samsung being American, no sir. And more of Apple products are made in America since this article.

https://financesonline.com/hello-world-the-economics-of-iphone/

“iPhone is a genuine American product because its engineering and design are borne out of the ingenuity and skill of American developers and industrial designers in Cupertino, California, Apple’s headquarters...”

“Beyond the planning stage, iPhone 5 is still being made in America. Its brain, the A6 chip, is manufactured by a semiconductor company based in the US, perhaps an Intel or IBM plant or even a Samsung American subsidiary in Austin, Texas. The smartphone may be made from different countries, but it thinks as an American like you and me.”

“The software is also designed locally and a $500-million data center was even built in North Carolina. The radio frequency part is made by Ohio-based Triquint, the audio chip by Cirrus Logic, a Texan company and the controller chips by California-based PMC Sierra and Broadcom Corp. Evidently, the specialized parts and design are American, making the iPhone a first-rate, cutting edge product. Interestingly, the glass is developed and manufactured by a Corning plant in Kentucky, although the bulk of manufacturing has since been shipped out to the company’s plants in Japan and Taiwan.”

“The technical specifications aside, iPhone creates local derivative economies around it: its innovative marketing is handled by TBWA with offices in Los Angeles and New York, and its apps are written by American software companies. Apple is also one of the few companies that maintains a US-based local customer call center in Indiana, Texas and California to name a few.”

This is a primo example of why Trump is getting so much heat. All these companies making trillions off cheap labor, so you can imagine what they are paying to get Trump out of office.

Your comment is correct and what I meant.

SpeedyInTexas your statements have all been completely correct. And being assembled in Vietnam most likely will mean that these Samsung phones along with many others not assembled in China will not pay a cent of the duties about to be assessed on Chinese imports.

Roadcat, is doing what the media and anti-Trumpers always seem to do... trying to confuse the issue by bringing in an outside entity, Samsung. Samsung is a multinational based in South Korea which has plenty of products assembled abroad. But unlike Apple, the vast bulk of Samsung’s capital expenditures directly benefit South Korea. Apple is based in the United States but in proportion to their Trillion dollar market value, they spend an inexcusably meager amount on capital expenditures within the United States.

The best example roadcat was able to come up was a $500 million dollar investment in North Carolina. So lets see $500 million divided by $1 Trillion... 500,000,000 / 1,000,000,000,000 = 0.0005 or 1/2000th of Apple's value spent on a “data center” that provides 50 “direct” jobs to people in North Carolina. How generous of them!

So as roadcat wishes lets compare Samsung to Apple in how they assist the economy of the country where they are based. “Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) said on Tuesday it will invest at least $18.6 billion in South Korea to extend its lead in memory chips and next-generation smartphone displays, in a plan that promises to create almost half a million jobs” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-chips/samsung-plans-18-6-billion-south-korea-investment-to-widen-chip-lead-idUSKBN19P06T

Samsung reportadly spent nearly 10% of their market value investing in their home country and created nearly “half a million” jobs there. Wouldn't it be nice if Apple decided to spend 10% of their market valuation in investments here in the United States? Heck it would be nice if they chose to spend 1% of their market value on investments here that created thousands of jobs. But as I said before, I wouldn't hold my breath. Apple is too busy helping the Chinese government crack down on dissidents, banning conservative apps from their app store, and promoting the LGBTQHYW lifestyle to spend money on capital expenditures and create jobs here in America.

As far as I and the numbers are concerned Samsung is a very good corporate citizen in their home country while Apple is a disgusting example of pure greed and self importance.

I would like to know what Apple patents are now expired, and whether the door is open for design mimicry. I’m sure there are tons of companies out there that could mimic Apple performance - or better, if legally allowed to do so.

You're a horrible liar, and making things up again. Grow up. I never came up with that example, and certainly never made the case it was the best example. Liar.

Apple has many facilities in the USA, unlike Samsung (crickets...). And Apple is investing $350 billion over the next 5 years in the U.S.A. That is billions, not millions. That averages out to $70 billion a year - a far cry from the $500 million you said. Why don't you try being an American for once, and buy American products instead of pushing commie Samsung stuff that is Korean.

What a tantrum! Remember, we are only talking about cell phones here. You obviously have an unhealthy obsession. I don’t even use mine unless I am on the road. I quoted only from you, the links that you provided, and the results from the Google search that you suggested. And you are the one who brought Samsung into the discussion. What we are hearing from you is called “projection”. Save your phony outrage and foul mouthed name calling for your lefty Apple Fan Boy LBGTQWTF forums.

“Roadcat, is doing what the media and anti-Trumpers always seem to do... trying to confuse the issue by bringing in an outside entity, Samsung.” from me, post 55.

““The software is also designed locally and a $500-million data center was even built in North Carolina.” from roadcat post 44. What other links or posts did you provide detailing Apple’s investments in America? Nothing until I pressed you.

Grow up and keep your foul mouthed accusations to yourself or use them in your lefty teenaged Apple Fan Boy forums where they can be appreciated.

Look again, post 44 is your post! Your statement. I didn't write it, you did. Why don't you try using logic and facts, instead of using leftist liberal tactics to support your commie tendencies.

Partner, we need to elect Republican that are for America and not your typical Rinos, which the Republican party currently has way too many.

I did hear that Apple is building something in Wisconsin but I did not get what type of plant they are building. I did hear that the investment in the State of Wisconsin was going to be around $30 Billion.
