It’s shameful what US Open did to Naomi Osaka (Tennis)
NY Post ^ | 9/8/2018 | Maureen Callahan

Naomi Osaka, 20 years old, just became the first player from Japan to win a Grand Slam.

Yet rather than cheer Osaka, the crowd, the commentators and US Open officials all expressed shock and grief that Serena Williams lost.

Osaka spent what should have been her victory lap in tears. It had been her childhood dream to make it to the US Open and possibly play against Williams, her idol, in the final.

It’s hard to recall a more unsportsmanlike event.

Here was a young girl who pulled off one of the greatest upsets ever, who fought for every point she earned, ashamed.

At the awards ceremony, Osaka covered her face with her black visor and cried. The crowd booed her. Katrina Adams, chairman and president of the USTA, opened the awards ceremony by denigrating the winner and lionizing Williams — whose ego, if anything, needs piercing.

“Perhaps it’s not the finish we were looking for today,” Adams said, “but Serena, you are a champion of all champions.” Addressing the crowd, Adams added, “This mama is a role model and respected by all.”

That’s not likely the case now, not after the world watched as Serena Williams had a series of epic meltdowns on the court, all sparked when the umpire warned her: No coaching from the side. Her coach was making visible hand signals.

...

After her loss, Williams’s coach admitted to ESPN that he had, in fact, been coaching from the stands, a code violation. The warning was fair.

What an entitled cow Serena is.

I’m watching the rerun now, and saw how she yelled at the referee. He should have kicked her out then and there.

She’s got such a disgusting attitude I’m gladly cheering for the Japanese.

Wait, doesn’t it count for anything that Osaka’s father was a Haitian, making her Afro-Japanese? This race card game is so confusing.

It was a sad display of behavior from the crowd. They ruined Osaka’s first Slam victory.

Osaka is actually half black and half Japanese was born in Japan and grew up in the US - has dual citizenship.

“Naomi Osaka was born in Osaka, Japan, to a Japanese mother, Tamaki Osaka, and a Haitian father, Leonard “San” François. Naomi and her older sister Mari were given their mother’s maiden name for practical reasons when the family lived in Japan.[6][7] Her father was born in Haiti and went to New York University before moving to Japan, where he met and married her mother.[2] Naomi and Mari, who is also a professional tennis player, have played together in doubles tennis.[8] Naomi Osaka moved to the United States at the age of three with her family and currently resides in Florida.[7] She graduated from Elmont Alden Terrace Primary and Broward Virtual High School. Her tennis club was the Harold Solomon Institute (Florida Tennis SBT Academy), ProWorld Tennis Academy.[9]”

Osaka has only played Serena twice. Whupping her both times. But this time Serena was having a hissy fit. She spewed all the entitled garbage she could muster at the umpire. I could not be less proud to be an American after this show of unsportsmanlike behavior.

I need to watch American Sniper one more time to feel better.

Serena won’t admit it yet, but it’s probably time for her to retire now, with her head up high. It’s time to pass the baton to the next generation and start coaching. I heard the Standing Ovation Serena got before the game even started. That’s how Personality Cults act. I thought tennis was different.

I heard of a tournament that has much greater ticket sales if "the sisters" competed in the tournament. Therefore, the tournament "bent" the rules and provided extra incentives for them to attend.

Also, Serena and Venus stayed well away from the Confederate flag issue for many years.

Serena needs to develop a graceful exit strategy.

On my NY baseball chatting site, there is one guy from the city who always goes to the Open and said most were disturbed about the behavior and unsportsmanlike display by Williams. He said he never liked her and now this seals it for him.

Both Naomi and Serena are standouts, superhuman athletes.

Serena’s behavior is unfortunate but when I look to see her infractions, I am coming up empty. I am not defending her but I just don’t follow what the eff the referee was on to her about.

I asked what rule did she violate and would like to know the basis of any such rule, but I can’t get any reasonable answers.

All I get is she acts like she’s entitled, she’s on male hormones and such rot, such garbage. No one seems to know the underlying complaints.

I know the game of tennis quite well. But as I dig for answers the results are I think the referee could be an a-hole and that would make Serena’s distress understandable.

There is reported some rule about ‘coaching’, about receiving hand signals from a coach. I am not understanding how this impacts the game.

It’s reported Serena has 24 Grand Slam titles. That makes her a star among superstars. She deserves the benefit of the doubt.

But if someone can explain to me in a reasonable way the referee’s rationale and the rationale for the coaching rule, I would be more inclined to view Serena unfavorably but as of now I just don’t get it.

You’re being obtuse.

The rationale for the coaching rule is irrelevant. It’s the rule. You have to abide by the rules.

The judge thought the coach was coaching, which is against the rules. The coach admitted it. Serena, lied about it during the match. She was penalized a point. Then Serena was abusive, I would say, excessively abusive and received a game penalty.

The judge was actually very tolerant of the childish outburst, which last a long period of time. Serena was asking for it, because she knew the young girl was going to beat her - again.

1. She was warned about the violation of the coaching rule. If that was the end of it, this all would have been an academic exercise.

2. She claimed she wasn't being coached from the stands, and berated the official endlessly over it. And yet her coach admitted afterwards that he was doing exactly that.

3. She smashed her racket to the ground and destroyed it after losing a game. Since she had already been warned for the prior infraction, this meant a point penalty was imposed.

4. She continued to berate the official and demanded an apology -- which is ludicrous in light of the coach's admission as described in #2. She was penalized for that, and this was her THIRD infraction it meant she was penalized a full game.

Some people obviously don't know when to shut the hell up.

Here's the thing I've noticed: I think she throws these tantrums when she is being outplayed and knows she's going to lose. She wants to pretend she lost for a reason that has nothing to do with getting thoroughly outplayed.

> “You have to abide by the rules.”

It’s not serious, it’s a game and this rule has no bearing on the outcome of the contest.

I watch contests to see power and talent. I don’t give a frick about referees and their asinine rules.

If a referee said there was a rule that Serena must wear a pink pussy hat, I’d be ranting a lot louder than Serena and asking for my money back in addition to voting that such referees be sent on a one way trip to Syria.

But that’s just me.

Now Kaeper-crappernick is a different story. The rule is to stand for the national anthem which is symbolic in showing appreciation and gratitude for our freedoms and for those who died to allow us to keep and enjoy our freedoms.

I looked at videos of the game. Naomi deserves congratulations. She is a standout and so is Serena. Serena should congratulate Naomi. But I can understand Serena’s distress at such assinine calls by the referee.

The referee showed arrogance as if the game is about him and not the players.

Stupid-Stupid-Stupid!

I’m not watching or following the game because it’s full of sh*t.

I agree with your #1.

Your #2 is not solid. She said she did not receive coaching. The coach can say whatever he wants but if she did not acknowledge or see or act upon his coaching, THEN WTF HAS THAT GOT TO DO WITH ANYTHING? THE REFEREE IS AN *SS!

Your #3 means nothing. McEnroe was an incredible player with a nasty temper. He busted rackets as a matter of course. He never got hit with penalties because of his temper tantrums. The issues he screamed and broke rackets about was whether his serve was on the line or a quarter inch out. That’s where referees are needed.

It’ a fricken game for God’s sakes. Tempers flare, frustrations set in. Serena was not crazy out of control, she was distressed by an a-hole ref who thought the game was all about him. This a-hole ref told her she ‘cheated’ which set her off. It would set most people off in such settings. This ref dude was clearly an arrogant *ss. He needs to be blackballed.

Naomi deserves congratulations. Serena should congratulate her. The referee needs to have his nuts put in a vice.

Serena lost and should show good sportsmanship.

But the game needs to be reviewed and referees need to be booted. The game should never be about a referee and the rules should make sense and never get in the way of an outcome.

Please do a search on McEnroe's tantrum in Stockholm in 1984. It unfolded almost exactly the same way this incident did ... and guess what: McEnroe was penalized the exact same way Serena Williams was (warning, then point penalty, then game penalty).
