Washington (CNN)Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told supporters at a rally on Saturday that Democrats wanted to make Texas like California and listed off a few things as stereotypical staples of the blue state.
"We are seeing tens of millions of dollars flooding into the state of Texas from liberals all over the country who desperately want to turn the state of Texas blue," Cruz said. "They want us to be just like California, right down to tofu and silicon and dyed hair."
Cruz added that his wife, Heidi Cruz, was "a California vegetarian."
"She's wonderful, but I brought her to the great state of Texas," Cruz said.
Cruz's line was part of a speaking event in Katy, Texas, according to a video shared on his Twitter account, and came as he works to fend off a challenge from Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke this November.
While Texas is generally thought of as a Republican stronghold, O'Rourke's bid has received national attention, and an August poll showed Cruz with only a slight lead.

We are talking about a state where
one of districts thereof, is
represented by none other than
Sheila Jackson Lee.
Texas would just be returning to what it was prior to the 1980 election.
They voted for Carter in 1976 and democrat in the previous elections.
We’ll just round then all up and send them elsewhere. Thanks so much for your helpful advice.
If Ted isn’t careful people are going to think he’s in competition with Plugs Biden for the title: King of the Gaffes.
Or he’s just mentally deficient.
No doubt, Tejas was LBJ country.
My Tx. born and bred grandfather was a Democrat thru & thru.
Mexico lost Texas via immigration. Texas will fall in time again. Just as the South as a whole is slowing being bred out and imported in.
That he calls Totalitarian Socialist Fascist “Liberals’, tells me he’s Cruzing for a losin.
“Tofu & Dyed Hair” lol!
I like Ted, but sometimes he makes himself sound like Jed Clampett from that TV comedy. I know he’s trying to sound authentic. Just like others; “Gonna get me a Hunting License!”
I have to laugh sometimes at the Image my present state of California has to those in different states.
Don’t forget that a large number of us are not natives of this state. I chose to live here after leaving the Navy back in 1983. I could have gone back to either Michigan or Ohio.
As a conservative, I’ve learned to pick my battles, and not be too quick to take the bait when hearing an opposing view.
I expect Trump can drag this guy across the finish line, but it is almost not worth it.
So you want the Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke to win? If Cruz loses Texas we are in deep Do Doo..
Texas is not lost. The Socialist nut will not be elected, but it's looking like Ted won't win by a decisive margin.
Not good. It'll only encourage the left to try even harder next time.
Well that’s the minor stuff. How about turning Texas into Venezuela!
This paper examines the growth of government during this century as a result of giving women the right to vote. Using cross-sectional time-series data for 1870 to 1940, we examine state government expenditures and revenue as well as voting by U.S. House and Senate state delegations and the passage of a wide range of different state laws. Suffrage coincided with immediate increases in state government expenditures and revenue and more liberal voting patterns for federal representatives, and these effects continued growing over time as more women took advantage of the franchise. Contrary to many recent suggestions, the gender gap is not something that has arisen since the 1970s, and it helps explain why American government started growing when it did.
Hysteria \Hys*te"ri*a\, n. [NL.: cf. F. hyst['e]rie. See Hysteric.] (Med.) A nervous affection, occurring almost exclusively in women, in which the emotional and reflex excitability is exaggerated, and the will power correspondingly diminished, so that the patient loses control over the emotions, becomes the victim of imaginary sensations, and often falls into paroxism or fits. [1913 Webster] Note: The chief symptoms are convulsive, tossing movements of the limbs and head, uncontrollable crying and laughing, and a choking sensation as if a ball were lodged in the throat. The affection presents the most varied symptoms, often simulating those of the gravest diseases, but generally curable by mental treatment alone. Hysteric
No,
more Repub Senate seats are always good.
the problem is Cruz, himself.
Cheap shot.
...not to mention the huge influx of California liberals who are rapidly invading major Texas cities and adjoining satellite towns.
Cockroaches of the worst kind.
“Well just round then all up and send them elsewhere. “
Your abject arrogance is palpable. I truly hope Texas says red, but the way you’re headed doesn’t give me any confidence that you will stay red for very much longer. You’re too big a target for the Left not to have their undivided attention.
And here ya go pal:
“Former Cruz Spokesman: ‘It’s Possible’ O’Rourke Could Win”
That Texas would elect O’Rourke, tells me you are closer to going Blue than I would have ever thought. Tell us all why this is a possibility when Cruz is about as conservative as you get.
“We are talking about a state where
one of districts thereof, is
represented by none other than
Sheila Jackson Lee.”
Yes, she makes Mad Maxine Waters look like a Mensa!
