Dallas Officer Who Killed Man in His Own Home Says He Ignored Her Commands

A Dallas police officer who fatally shot her neighbor in his apartment, claiming she mistook the unit for her own, told the authorities that the door was already ajar when she entered and that she shot him after he ignored verbal commands, according to court records released on Monday.

The officer, Amber R. Guyger, 30, who has been charged with manslaughter, could face additional charges in a case that has led to accusations that the officer received preferential treatment and debate about whether race may have played a role in the deadly encounter between a white police officer and a black man in his home.

On Monday, the Dallas County district attorney, Faith Johnson, insisted that the investigation into the death of the neighbor, Botham Shem Jean, 26, had not ended and that her office could seek charges “including anything from murder to manslaughter.”

“We’ll present a thorough case to the grand jury so that a right decision can be made,” Ms. Johnson said at a news conference.

He should have shot the bitch through the door.

He allegedly ignored verbal commands and did what? Pulled a gun?

The legal resident of that apartment would have been well within his legal rights to "pull" a gun and empty it into her skull.

A knife?

Yeah, that too. Or a club, a sword, a halberd ...

Did he physically attack her?

Use of lethal force in self defense, inside one's own home, is not an attack.

If she did murder him she will be dealt with as a murdering criminal.

That is certainly NOT guaranteed.

“Why didn’t she just back out of the apt and call for backup?”

Exactly! Back away, call 911 (she was off duty).

On duty cops are walking communications centers these days. Including their cell phones. Off duty... her phone with some “insider” numbers. She should have used her resources and called.

“Police Officer? She looks more like a Meth addict!”

She looks totally overworked. Very common. medical interns look the same way. Hiring additional officers would help, but money gets wasted on other much less important garbage.

And if you’re a drunk cop, it just means your shift isn’t over.

I find this very hard to believe. She was either drunk or stoned, or there is something else going on.

Definitely. She didn’t recognize immediately that the furniture was different?

As a separate Freeper pointed out, the police are the citizens first and primary contact with their government. That interface needs to be as close to flawless as possible.

No, that’s only when they multiply, which they always seem to do.

They RUSH to use lethal force.

So do a lot of the male cops.

The investigation was promptly turned over to the Texas Rangers.

“Why should he obey commands from a stranger while in his own home?”

This is the problem I’ve wrestled with when it comes to the use of a firearm for protection within my own home. If there’s a knock at the door, the cops don’t always tell you who they are.
We had an incident a few years ago when two cops showed up at our door at 2 a.m. I was asleep in the Den and didn’t hear them knock. My wife answered the door and they told her that they were “responding to a 911 call placed from our residence.” Which was total BS. They refused to leave until she finally (sadly without waking me) offered to let them come in ( bad idea). They didn’t, they left. Imagine though going to your door with a hand gun in your hand in a situation like this. In this case, I’m just glad my wife didn’t go to the door with hers.
