It saddens me. It’s also the reason I stay so quite these days.

I can’t control my anger otherwise

I was at a training session at the AT&T facility in Bedminster, NJ. The instructor had just given us a 10-minute break, and he walked back into the room and said, “Be glad you’re not working at the World Trade Center today, a plane just hit one of the buildings.”

We all went out into the hallway, where there was a TV with CNN or maybe one of the local networks on. And we stood there and watched as the 2nd plane hit on live TV. We continued to watch, until the first tower collapsed, and then the second. At that point, the instructor said, “I think everyone should go home.”

I returned to my apartment, just outside New Brunswick, NJ. My apartment was on the 20th floor, facing northeast to Manhattan, about 30 miles away. I watched the smoke stretched for miles out to the east for the rest of that day, and for many days after.

One of the things I remember most, was the eerie absence of planes over the next few days. My apartment was right under the flight path into/out of Newark International Airport, and I was used to planes constantly passing over. The other thing I remember is my shock at how long smoke continued to rise from the site. For days and days, maybe even weeks, I could still see the smoke rising and drifting out to sea, from 30 miles away.

I know. I would be banned for “racism” and profiling and lord knows what else.

That’s why I post tunes, quizzes and baby animals. :) Mostly.

My Mother, My Wonderful Mother, had 12 grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren.

One day I began asking her the birthdays of them all. To my amazement she knew every single one. I knew what was important to her.

It was, especially the night of the attack. We could hear fighters flying low over the city and helicopters all night. It’s a tribute to our great American society that contrary to liberal mythology, there was no attack on Muslim communities that live close by in Brooklyn. But the worst thing was the smell from the site that lasted months.

I had a hard time going to sleep that morning. Was antsy with a sense that something was wrong but had no clue what it could be. I finally conked out and about an hour later my husband woke me up hollering something about war. In my stupor I thought he was saying the cats were on a fighting rampage or something.

I barreled out of the bedroom, cussing the cats, and was stunned to see them all sitting or lying around doing nothing.

Then Hubby said, "No. I think we're at war!" while pointing at the TV. "I heard about it on the radio in the garage and came in to see what was going on."

The towers were both billowing smoke and I had no clue why. Then there was a replay of the 2nd plane hitting and my heart sank with the knowledge America was under attack.
Then the Pentagon was hit, then the plane down in PA. Where would the next hit be?

I didn't sleep for two days. Other than helping Hubby gas up all the vehicles and stocking up on food and other items that Tuesday, I sat glued to the TV filled with horror ..... and with loathing for the scum who'd attacked. That loathing hasn't diminished one iota.

I remember like it was just yesterday. I had left home to go to work early, mailing a few letters for my mother and myself. My older brother was from out of town visiting and we had finished breakfast. After getting into work at the community college that I worked at, I decided to call my mther. She saw on tv what looked like a movie with first tower by a large plane. Thought it was an accident.

I sat in the same spot today that I was in 17 years ago.

A different company, different circumstance, same spot, same impotent rage.

Continue from 53. When the second tower was hit, my mother and I both knew we were under attack. I was in shock for a couple of days. It was the following Sunday after Church that I ended breaking down and crying.

To be that close that you could see the smoke. I imagine that when the smoke dissipated, the absence of those buildings was also chilling.

I would imagine that sleep was hard to come by after seeing and hearing and smelling what you who lived close by experienced. I would still be having nightmares.
