Ventilate passively if possible and get out.

But how do you know if it is possible to ventilate? Maybe while you are opening windows your house will explode.

Now for an education:

“Smell of Gas. Natural gas is one of the safest sources of energy available. Natural gas is non-toxic, colorless, tasteless, and odorless. A distinctive, pungent odor, similar to rotten eggs, is added so that you can recognize it easily and know if natural gas is escaping.”

Maybe that is what the Lawrence Mayor was saying in Spanish. Who knows what he was saying. Is this America?

I read about this incident and immediately thought of a scene in Live Free or Die Hard.

I read all of your posts. You basically said that even if you don’t smell the odor that is added to natural gas then don’t take the slightest risk to protect your home because a home is not worth the slightest risk to protect. Better to be a snowflake. Let your home possibly explode later, and put other innocent lives at risk.

Oil does not blow up your house.

Electric does not blow up your house.

Wood and coal do not blow up your house.

Right. An oil fired boiler can blow up your house. . .

“The lines seem to be better maintained in the rich enclaves.”

BS!

The lines are maintained the same no matter what “side” of the tracks they may be in accordance with PHMSA (federal) and PSC (state) regulations.

The rich tend to live in newer developments and the gas distribution system is the newer plastic mains and services in those areas.

But, a lot of gas utilities are spending a huge amount of capital to replace older cast iron, unprotected steel as well as the brittle Aldyl-A (plastic) mains with the more reliable medium density polyethylene plastic (MDPE). Yeah a lot of people complain about rate hikes, but these hikes are are what pay for these projects since gas utilities do not receive the big fat federal grants like your local water utility gets for their main replacements.

You still have to turn off the services.

“Can’t they turn off the gas from its source?”

Yes they can, but you have what’s called line pack which is the volume of gas contained in the mains and services. The amount of gas depends on the size of the main, how many miles of main, pressure, etc.

For example a 50 mile section of a 42” transmission line @ 1000psi contains 200 million cubic feet of gas or enough to operate a stove for something like 2000 years.

Doesn’t mean anything.

Two totally DIFFERENT companies.

These explosions involved Columbia Gas, NOT National Grid.

A pressure relief valve or pressure regulator diverts excess pressure and vents it to atmosphere.

If you read further then you will see that I constantly refined my thinking, because at that point I had not considered ignition sources.
