Tennis Umpires Consider Boycotting Matches by Serena Williams after Recent Outburst at US Open

Tennis chair umpires are discussing boycotting matches by Serena Williams following her meltdown at the US Open final.

The umpires are talking about unionizing following the outburst last weekend.

As fallout continues from Saturday’s heated U.S. Open final that saw Naomi Osaka defeat Serena Williams in a match marred by conflict and controversy, tennis umpires are having their say.

They’re not pleased with Williams or what they see as a lack of support from the tennis world for chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who was on the receiving end of a heated outburst from the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

The Times of London reports that there is a growing consensus that umpires feel they were “not supported by the USTA” on several occasions and cite one anonymous source claiming that umpires are considering boycotting matches played by Williams.

The source tells The Times that some umpires believe that Ramos was “thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job and was not willing to be abused for it” and that they are considering “to refuse any match assignments involving Williams until she apologizes for vilifying Ramos and calling him a ‘liar’ and a ‘thief.’”

Williams was assessed three code violations during the the loss to Osaka. Ramos warned her against receiving coaching early in the second set, which Williams protested.

A little stale (3 days), but noteworthy.

Hope the umpires boycott.

The boycott would only hurt the other players.

Go for it!

That entitled overweight beech was way out of line.

She’s got fame and fortune, yet she turns on the water works and cries out the gender card. Ha! Nobody took the bait.

I don’t know who wakes up to her in the morning (if anyone) but that’s got to be a daily horror show! Almost as bad as Moochie...

Williams is black, so by Prog rules, she’s exempt from all rules, and as the Baltimore mayor said about rioters, needs “space to destroy.” We will get more of the behavior we tolerate.

“The boycott would only hurt the other players.”

Yeah, but NIKE would bring on Serena as the female face of sacrifice and sell millions more shoes.

The umpire was right, but he shouldn’t have “discussed” it with the spoiled brat. He should have said that his decision was final.

The highly-privileged member of two government-certified victim groups deserves nothing.

How dare the umpire not let her win...!

She’s black and a women...

A win for her should be automatic...

Where is his groveling apology!

Providing these umpires with yellow cards and red cards to hand players who act badly could help the situation. And a hockey stick in case some oversized roid-rage amazon charges the umpire with a tennis racket in her hand.

Translation:

Serena has been a problem for a long time and now at long last we're sick of her. If no one else is going to address this problem we will.

Serena had a meltdown when Kim Clijsters beat her in the 2009 US Open.

Another US Open meltdown in 2011 vs. Samantha Stosur.

And she was sick with anger for days after losing to Alize Cornet in 2014 Wimbledon.

She ain’t right.

On top of illegal coaching, racquet abuse, verbal assault on an official, she should have been called for a time violation, which would have meant default, the umpire showed restraint.. Her rant went on for at least fifteen minutes. She was losing and exhausted and her only hope was to delay play and physically regroup, change the momentum of Osaka and use the crowd to get behind her, which she does all the time.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As one of the announcers for the match said, Naomi was playing Serena AND the crowd. I thought Naomi showed great maturity, self-control, and composure during the entire match as the crowd cheered every Serena point, then booed the ref/USTA/whoever as Serena blew up. Naomi beat the cr@p out of Serena from the get-go .... not the “desired outcome”, but a really sweet win for those of us who are sick half to death of Serena and all the talk of her ‘comeback’, her being a mom, her greatness, Serena Serena Serena ad nauseam. I have a relative who played college tennis, is currently a teaching pro, has been a hitting partner for some names you might recognize on the WTA & also does some tournaments so I really like watching matches, but not the Williams sisters.

or make sure Ramos IS the umpire for her games and if she doesn't like it, well, she can always forfeit

The statement issued afterwards by the USTA was terrible. They failed to support the umpire and were more concerned about Serena. Apparently the rules only apply to certain people.

If she wants equality she's gonna have to play five sets like the men do.

Plus, she's gonna have to be able to handle being criticized.

If she can't handle the truth she shouldn't be on the court.
