Watching Fox News. Just had a live interview with Rick Leventhal in Wilmington. Has video of looters (the usual perp types) at a Family Dollar and someone yelled at him "where are the police? Our taxes pay for them?." Leventhal contacted the police and they responded back that it was a "management decision" not to respond (their response was shown on the story)

Why automatic weapons should never have been banned and semis should never be banned. Only way to control a mob.

“The Koreans learned this lesson in the L.A. Riots... The police have never given a complete total of the number of looters killed by gunfire.”

And, apparently, be prepared to eat what you shoot!

Just to be clear, “standing down” means “not doing their jobs of stopping robberies in progress”, and that needs to be a firing offense.

How many Family Dollar stores have helped out poor families? I’m not too ashamed to say that when my beloved husband lost his job that we shopped here and came to really appreciate its cheap prices and varied ingredients?? I was the one white girl among the crowd, too! Sharper than a serpent’s tooth is an ungrateful customer...

In my town everyone goes there for gift wrap, party supplies, etc...Many different demographic groups.

It is outrageous that police told to stand down, and that heeds to be stopped and changed going forward over next few weeks!

They were eventually arrested:

Police arrest 5 in North Carolina as looters begin to capitalize on Florence chaos

Never again? You could say the same for the entire greater LA area. And btw, it wasn’t just the Koreans who eventually armed up, but thousands of others all over the region.

Trust Rick Leventhal. He was really good covering Iraq. We could have used him in Vietnam. I’d buy him lunch at the Continental or Caravelle Hotel.

#52 re “Stand down. Why am I not surprised?”

Obama’s “Benghazi Syndrome” mentality.
Obama’s “ISIS JV team” mentality.
Bill Clinton’s “Al Qaeda is a local problem Syndrome”.

Hillary Clinton’s “Video Started it all Syndrome”.
Hillary Clinton’s “What Difference Does It Make Now Syndrome”.

And, John Kerry’s “I Was in Cambodia for Christmas Syndrome”.

The plan is probably for Family Dollar to file an insurance claim for all the stolen merchandise. But guess what...If they do then they can now get slapped with Fraud charges because they are now accomplices in the robbery.

Someone needs to contact the insurance company and make them aware of this.

"....The store merchandise is covered dollar for dollar isn’t it, equivalent to 100% sales?"

If it was an insurable loss it would be limited to cost or in the best of circumstances, replacement value for the inventory. Never heard of a policy which will give the insured the equivalent of 100% of retail sales? That would be an invitation to criminal behavior by the business owner.

And I have never heard of a policy which will cover inventory "shrinkage", i.e. theft by employees, shoplifting or looting. The premiums would be outrageously high since fraud would be a major problem. Insurance companies write policies in a restrictive manner because far too many folks look at them as a limitless piggy bank when they are not.

So to answer your question based on my experience, the store is either looking to not piss off the locals by having them arrested or for some political reasons they are accepting the loss and will recover it from higher prices later. Losses from looting won't be covered by insurance in my opinion. And Family Dollar Store does a great disservice to other businesses and residence in the area. If they wish to give away merchandise, do it in an organized manner through the local Salvation Army or other relief organizations rather than allowing lawlessness in the streets.

------------

I'm speaking as a former business owner who had two claims from tornado damage in the Midwest. The insurance agency encouraged me to board-up, cover-up as best I could to limit further damage and they reimbursed actual cost for plastic tarps and plywood without batting an eyelash. The insurance adjusters were there the next day and treated me fairly I felt, delivering a check for me the very next day. They were working for the company but were familiar with the damages which storms cause including replacing damaged insulation in the attic and repainting. In one storm the entire roof had to be re-shingled and by putting in some sweat equity on my part I was largely covered in full.

-----------------

People who have had days to prepare for a storm should take it upon themselves and buy easily prepared food and bottled water, plus fill some buckets for cleaning and sanitation in the days prior to. This whole subculture in America that if you need or want it you just go and take it ........ should be met with arrests and prosecution or the more expedient means available.

Interesting - maybe the store was doing poorly and mgmt was hoping for a total loss - and having been in a family dollar a few times myself there’s not much worth saving - useless junk unless you’re in the market for a 5 oz bottle of laundry detergent.

Different store - police arrested looters at a "Dollar General" store; looking for looters at the "Family Dollar." An extended curfew has been issued for a certain area of the city occupied by a certain category of potential looters.
