Victor Davis Hanson: Are we on the verge of civil war?
washingtontimes.com ^ | Victor Davis Hanson

Americans keep dividing into two hostile camps.

It seems the country is back to 1860 on the eve of the Civil War, rather than in 2018, during the greatest age of affluence, leisure and freedom in the history of civilization.

The ancient historian Thucydides called the civil discord that tore apart the fifth-century B.C. Greek city-states “stasis.” He saw stasis as a bitter civil war between the revolutionary masses and the traditionalist middle and upper classes.

Something like that ancient divide is now infecting every aspect of American life.

Americans increasingly are either proud of past U.S. traditions, ongoing reform and current American exceptionalism, or they insist that the country was hopelessly flawed at its birth and must be radically reinvented to rectify its original sins.

No sphere of life is immune from the subsequent politicization: Not movies, television, professional sports, late-night comedy or colleges. Even hurricanes are typically leveraged to advance political agendas.

Jumps to Thucydides in the third sentence. Standard VDH fair, seeing echoes of classical Greece in our modern travails. So refreshing after watching Dems whose historical perspective begins either when they were born or when they were elected.

Whose side has the guns?

Plenty of guns on both sides. Whose side has no problem with breaking things and hurting people to get their demands met?

Unfortunately, it needs to be. The real danger is that Conservatives and the GOP won't fight and the country will go out with a whimper and become a Socialist/Communist hell.

Whose side has the guns?

The Deep State has plenty of guns, of types which We the People are "forbidden" to own.

I was telling students 10 YEARS AGO that if some folks didn’t back off, we were going to have a civil war. Literally, 10 YEARS AGO. Administrators got upset with me. If it happens, some folks are going to regret having told me off.

Yes and not soon enough. The garden that we call America needs weeding.

Whose side has no problem with breaking things and hurting people to get their demands met?

Unfortunately ... their side.

Our side believes making demands is uncivilized, and we should all learn to compromise - or maybe set up a committee to investigate the possibility of setting the date for a meeting so we can discuss it all.

VDH is usually very clear-headed in his thinking but here I think he is behind the times.

The war has already begun (probably started when Obama was first elected). The Radical Left/Marxists/Post-Modernists have come into the open. We can see who they are and they tell us what they want, which is a completely new constitution and country which reflects THEIR principles.

As Clausewitz said (I paraphrase), "war is politics by other means." If you listen to the exhortations of Maxine Waters, you can hear the "other means" being planned by the Left. We have already seen the "other means" in the actions of Antifa.

That is just the beginning of the violent phase...but it is also a point of no return.

Think back to the "civil war" of the Vietnam era. The Left didn't have the guns back then either. They fought their battle in the media.

Not if, but when this accelerates to real in the street violence, Soros and his ilk will provide the guns to the Antifa types.

Libtards need to be very careful since they might get what they want and in the end get their diversity shoved right down their throats. We have the gun and they still don't know which bathroom to pee in. Keep in mind owning a gun or numerous guns is only being diverse since ALL must be included in a diverse society!

I think I can answer this question quite simply. Although, NonValueAdded sums it up as succinctly as anyone.

Scenario:

Conservatives live in their neighborhood. They live their lives. Don’t infringe on other people, their neighbors, everyone gets along or at the very least, is courteous to one another. They go to work. Pay their bills. The need for massive police forces are not there, low crime, people obey the law and don’t cause problems. You don’t bother me, I won’t bother you. Doesn’t mean that everyone on the block loves each other, holds hand and sings KumBaYa, but everyone knows their left and right limits. And they all live in and can maintain a civil prosperous society.

Liberals/Progressives/Socialists/Communists live in their neighborhood. They infringe on other peoples lives. Want to take from others because they’re too lazy to get it themselves. Think everything is owed to them. Someone else should pay. Life is unfair. Someone should take care of me. And if you don’t think what I think, you’re racist, misogynist, phobic in every way, shape and form. They foment chaos and violence at every turn, because they cannot win w/ their ideas.

Libertarians think everyone should be able to do what they want, when they want, as long as it doesn’t infringe on another. Which is perfectly fine, with me. But what happens when it does infringe on another. Who solves the problem? Do they duel at high noon? Do they call the police and go through the courts? Something libertarians don’t think is needed.

Eventually, the Liberals, et al, look at the other side and see that everything really is, a nice house, picket fence, nice car, nice lawn, everyone getting along, no issues, and they cannot stand it. They cannot stand that those that aren’t like them, can just live their lives in peace. They demand that they get the same results, even though they don’t want the same results. That is, unless they are the celebrities, hipsters, academics and wealthy liberals that live in the most exclusive parts of our cities and states.

Civil War 2 is already happening. It began the day after Trump was elected.
