That's very interesting. The irony is that the loss of Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam was what turned Subic Bay in the Philippines into such an important U.S. Navy asset.

I may be wrong about this, but I believe Cam Ranh Bay was the largest U.S. military installation in the world outside the U.S. up until 1975.
