“What color?”

That’s really the only remaining decision.

Musk needs to say away from any cocaine deals that seem too good to be true.

Guy he accused of being a pedo with a 12 year old wife is actually married to a 40 year old salon owner. And he *has* sued Musk - in three countries as of September 17. Musk has apologized but did not retract.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2018/09/17/elon-musk-sued-defamation-by-thai-cave-rescue-volunteer-he-called-child-rapist/

“Musk has never supplied evidence for his claims, and independent efforts to substantiate them have failed. Unsworth’s lawyer said he shares a home with his significant other, a 40-year-old owner of a nail salon, in the countryside near Chiang Rai in Thailand.”

“Electric vehicles are niche vehicles that have too short a range , take too long to recharge, cost too much (without a subsidy), dont last long enough (dunno about the rest of you but I average keeping a car 12 years), are very expensive to repair (new battery pack), and pollute more than gas vehicles- just pollute in a different location.”

Well my son leased a Nissan Leaf to use to commute the 100 mile daily round trip from his home to work. He had a solar electricity system installed on his roof, and between the two of them, he pays nothing other than his lease cost to get to work.
Yeah, electric vehicles are niche products, but they are good at what they do.

I wonder what a detailed cost analysis of your son’s electric venture with and without the subsidies would reveal.

It doesn’t matter to him. He did what he did to get himself into a situation where he could afford to commute. He’s changed jobs now. And for a few months, he has to commute to the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco until his new employer moves to the East Bay very near his home. So today he takes BART to the Mission District then uses his electric skateboard to go the last couple of miles to his office! The damned thing goes 25 mph, will climb any hill on his route, has dynamic braking which recharges the battery when going down hill, and he can charge it under his desk! It even has a wireless hand control for throttle and brake. The Leaf will probably go away now.

I notice that although you seem impressed by electric vehicles, you wisely put your money on the tried and true IC technology. Personally the only circumstances under which I would buy an electric vehicle are if the only alternatives were walking, a horse (they are better than a horse) or public transit. Electric vehicles are a solution for which there is no problem.

I think you will find, over time that the IC engine is replaced with vehicles with electric propulsion for a variety of reasons. Frankly, if I had the money, I’d buy a hybrid supercar. The McLaren P1 Hybrid is just an awesome vehicle. 717hp twin-turbo V8 coupled with a 193hp electric motor and a control system that gives the driver constant torque from standstill to 200+ mph! There is a video of this car being put through it’s paces by a British Automotive Journalist at the F1 track in Dubai. Like he said “it’s a new thing!”

Last night I was waiting at a light in downtown Oakland, CA. The light lead to a freeway on ramp. Next to me was a brand new Tesla Model 3 ( the car that we’re told by the press isn’t being produced). It had no license plates. When the light turned green, the Tesla was GONE! by the time I entered the traffic lanes on the freeway, the Tesla was at least 1/4 mile ahead and I wasn’t slow about getting under way.

electric motors have their maximum torque at stall - well know fact which explains their good acceleration, but they're traction limited like any other wheeled vehicle. However, electric cars just don't measure up as practical except in very limited circumstances. How many electric vehicles do you see at Le Mans? None - because they can't go the distance. There was a hybrid Nissan, but as I recall it broke and didn't finish.

Electric power is great for warehouse fork lifts for two reasons - you can use the very heavy batteries as a counterweight and you don't get any CO as building up to cause health problems for your employees.
