Trump: ‘In a very short period of time, bump stocks will be ruled out’

When questioned on the one-year anniversary of the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest Festival Shooting, President Trump said his administration was looking to soon “eliminate” bump stocks.

Trump was speaking to reporters in the White House’s Rose Garden on Monday about the new trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, when he took a moment to pause and acknowledge the anniversary of the event that left 58 dead and some 850 wounded, saying the shooting as “a horrible, horrible time in the life of our country.”

Just over an hour into the conference, when asked about the subject of bump stocks and the anniversary of the Las Vegas shootings, Trump said he was nearing action on the devices which catapulted to national attention for their role in the event.

“In order to eliminate — terminate — bump stocks, we have to go through a procedure,” said Trump. “We are now at the final stages of that procedure — in fact, the lawyers were just telling me — and over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be able to write it out. But you can’t just write it out because rules and regulations in this nation are really tough, even for something like that.

“So we’re knocking out bump stocks,” said Trump. “I’ve told the NRA, I’ve told everyone. Bump stocks are gone. But to do it you have to go to public hearings — which we’ve had.

Saying his administration was working on both sides in Congress on the issue, Trump summed up that, “In a very short period of time, bump stocks will be ruled out.”

Since last December, regulators have been researching federal law to determine if certain bump stock devices fall within the definition of “machine gun,” which led to Trump in February ordering the Department of Justice to craft regulations to “write out” the devices himself. Since then, the primary maker of bump stocks in the country stopped taking orders for the controversial devices, although they are still readily available.

Although at least eight states have outlawed bump stocks in the past year, Americans could possess as many as 520,000 of the devices, according to estimates from federal regulators. Meanwhile, statewide bans on bump stocks have sparked lawsuits in Florida, Maryland, and Vermont.

Mississippi-based Second Amendment attorney Stephen Stamboulieh said, should the federal government move to ban the devices, “I’m going to sue them day one.”

Yes, I believe the President may not really be a gun sports shooter or general gun enthusiast as much as he's just a supporter of the U.S. Constitution and 2nd Amendment.

He's definitely wrong as regards the bump stocks though.

When we give-up any 2A right, we embolden the left to demand more and more.

Can’t see where bump stocks are good for anything but spraying a lot of inaccurate rounds down range...hate to see them outlawed but won’t stop supporting Trump unless he starts thinking about firearms in general....way too much at stake to worry about what amounts to a “hold muh beer and watch this” novelty.

Agree. I’ve fired one a few years ago and it was more of a gimmick. Considering my acquaintance who bought it is a machinist by trade with extensive military service we can be thankful the moron in Vegas didn’t have any real contacts in the world of rapid fire...Not sure he even has it anymore.

If the Kavanaugh nomination isn’t enough to prove the folks that there is no end to the left’s demands on all issues, I don’t know what else to tell anyone. Their appetite is never satisfied so why give up parts of our freedom in an attempt to satiate them?

We must all be Never-Trumpers now, according to the logic of the zealots around here.

Love my country, support my President... Think this is remarkably stupid.

I know he’s a city boy from New York and I do like him.

He doesn't know what he doesn't know. I find that trait particularly unlikable.

I'll support him when he's right ... on this he's dead wrong.

“Bump stocks” were banned by the membership at our gun club years ago. For some reason nobody thought to argue that our 2nd amendment rights were being infringed upon. And this is a gun club that you can’t be a member of unless you are also an NRA member.

I don’t believe anything we’ve been told about the so-called “Las Vegas shooting” investigation.

And McCabe was the FBI turd put in charge of the “investigation?” What a joke.

Having fired ARs with bump stocks and binary triggers, along with having a few sessions with genuine submachineguns and selective fire rifles under my belt, my verdict is that there is no substitute for the real thing. Are the former fun? Not enough fun for me to buy and install them. YMMV.

(I really enjoy running a couple of magazines through a BAR when I get the opportunity though... it is the antithesis of "subtlety and nuance.")

But yeah, I don't like being told what to do or what to own when it impacts no one else, and in a land of unlimited abortion funded at the pointy end of the IRS and fedgov in general, I consider it hypocritical and fatuous. I'm not too worried about PDJT taking anyone's gadgets.

Yet.

Bump stocks are a throwaway. The effect can be achieved with several different legal techniques and mechanisms including one’s belt loop. Some of the mechanisms are more accrate than the bump stock which is inherently inaccurate.

You can bump fire a whole bunch of rounds inaccurately down range without a bump fire stock.

Just depends on how you hold and fire the gun.

Personally I like to aim my shots, and I don’t wish to melt my barrel either.

Mr. Trump, now is not the time to piss off your base. Please don’t do this.

“...Lawsuit anyone?...”

...not until they also outlaw belt loops.

Yes, it’s the wording. A new trigger or muzzle brake could be outlawed because it “increases the rate of fire”.

When we give-up any 2A right

The second Amendment does not give you any gun rights, t asserts you have gun rights that God gave you and the government can not make any laws that says you don't.

The second has been dead for a couple hundred years.

When you are shooting fish in a barrel accuracy is not you first consideration.

I can guarantee that he hit more people by accident than he could have hit with a sniper rifle.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube that show a barrel melt down, not as easy as you might think. Think about shooting into a wall, is accuracy really the most important thing to you?

I was amazed that only 59 people were killed out of 23,000. Sounds like one of those collector items that is used once and remains in the gun safe.

When the Lawsuits make it to the SCOTUS, we will hopefully have a Majority of Conservative Justices thanks to POTUS Trump.

Everybody had better keep their eye on the ball rather than getting stuck in the weeds over stuff like this.

Yeah, it is.

It’s just the way I was taught to shoot by a Wildlife and Fisheries officer in Louisiana when I was about 14 or so.

I brought my Ruger 10/22 to the range, and one of the tests was 100 yd target shoot.

Of course I started firing of rounds like Rambo, and he said, no, that’s not the way to do this.

So he taught me carefully aimed, well placed shot with breathing control, all that good stuff, so that single lesson stuck with me for the rest of my life.
