Initial Senate vote on Kavanaugh nomination set for Friday

The Senate braced for a crucial initial vote Friday on Brett Kavanaugh’s tottering Supreme Court nomination after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set his polarized chamber on a schedule to decide an election-season battle that has consumed the nation. A showdown roll call over confirmation seemed likely over the weekend.

McConnell, R-Ky., cemented the process late Wednesday and announced that the FBI would soon deliver to an anxious Senate the potentially fateful report on claims that Kavanaugh sexually abused women. With Republicans clinging to a razor-thin 51-49 majority and five senators — including three Republicans — still vacillating, the conservative jurist’s prospects of Senate confirmation remained murky and dependent, in part, on the file’s contents, which are supposed to be kept secret.

“There will be plenty of time for members to review and be briefed on the supplemental material” before Friday’s vote, McConnell said to the nearly empty chamber. In a rare moment of randomness in what’s been a deadly serious process, the normally meticulous lawmaker’s cell phone emitted a ringtone during part of his remarks. […]

Amid complaints that some lawmakers were being confronted outside their homes, McConnell claimed on the Senate floor that the protesters were “part of the organized effort” to derail Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“There is no chance in the world that they’re going to scare us out of doing our duty,” he said. …

A High School journalism adviser would give this “new” story an F and require a re-write. Their instruction would be “Take out all the drama queen hysteric adjectives and suppositions and re-write it with just the fact”

Sadly, because of our current political culture and absurdly biased media, even if confirmed Kavanaugh will forever have an "asterisk" next to his name, and will be the brunt of jokes on late-night "comedy" shows.

Meanwhile, Ford will get a book deal, bi-annual appearances on "Ellen" and "The View", and a Showtime movie will sympathetically depict her mistreatment by those nasty old white Republican men in the Senate.

Initial?

Do we go for best two out of three, or something? Is it like the world series or something?

Whoever gave the Democrats the idea of making this a confrontational episode...really screwed up.

Yep, all they had to do was keep their heads down and they problem would of keep the Senate pretty evenly divided and won the US House. Now it looks like they managed to piss off everyone AND are going to lose on Judge K.

Congratulation Dems and Jeff Flake, you just managed to give yourselves a Pyrrhic Defeat.

It is also utterly delightfully because Jeff Flake has ended any chance of any poltical future ever by getting his poltical butt comprehensively kicked. He managed to piss off everyone.

Jeff Flake ends his poltical career with just about the most comprehensive poltical butt kicking in US Political history.

If the dems had a 1/3 of a brain and REALLy were interested in “saving the court”, they would have worked a deal with Mitch to confirm Kav with ease and a bunch of lower court judges in exchange for an agreement that the next SC justice will require a 60 vote majority. Knowing that RBG or Breyer can very possibly not be on the court by 2020, a deal like this would have given them some leverage to decide that next pick of Trumps. Now the next pick will guaranteed be just as/if not more constitutional then Kav and the dems will have nothing to defend against it. especially with the odds that they will lose senate seats in November.

The media is already saying Dems should protest that Dr. Ford was not once again interviewed so this cannot be “complete” and the 3 R’s (FFFLake, Collins and Murkowski) should protest.

The Pols would be smart NOT to take their talking points from Fran Townsend and NorDUH O’Donnell from their CBS This Morning political perch.

More of the Senate clown rules

They vote to start debate, then pompously bloviating about it for 30 hours, then the real vote is held.

Good another moron committing poltical suicide. Trump IS picking the next SC Justice. The question is does it happen NOW or in Jan after the GOP picks up US Senate seats?

even 3 gains by the GOP, and they look to be likely to get more, will make the GOP "Moderate" clown choir irrelevant. Flake and Corker are GONE in Jan 2019. Pick up even 3 more seats and Sasse and the rest of the moron choir of gutless GOP-E drones are irrelevant since we will have the votes without them
