Having researched doing military business in India for my employer at the time, I learned that one does not sell weapons without investing heavily in bribes. Bribery is an essential part of Russian culture as well, so Russia is well suited to deal in India.

Due to efforts by the Indian government to stamp out bribery as a means of deciding what India buys it may be possible to reverse the decision by finding out which officials have suddenly sprouted a Mercedes as the end of their car key. Of course this won’t work if it’s the top guy.

Promise to end H1B immediately and see what happens.

I’m for stopping H1B if India buys Russian.

Can someone help me care. I don’t understand why a missile system in India, made by the Russians, to defend India from the Chinese, has anything to do with us. If we sold them our system, The Indians, Russians, Chinese and Pakistan would all have our technology. India is a highly corrupt country. Lets keep our military out of there.

H1B should be ended no matter what air defense system India buys.

I’m for H1B dying anyway possible.

Wheel and deal weapons buying would be fine with me if it’d help.

Just bar all H1B visas from the nation of India, effective immediately. That ought to take care of this deal in one millisecond

This is none of our business. Neither India nor Russia is at war with us, and it’s up to India to decide what is the better deal for them.

Well, for starters, India and her allies operate US aircraft. An Indian missile system has to have a lot of the details of the IFF transponders on these aircraft in its memory banks in order to prevent shooting down your own airplanes.

If you really think this knowledge will stay with the Indians and not propagate back to Russia, I have a bridge to sell you.

The very best scenario is that in many cases Russian planes will be able to "spoof" other US missiles into thinking they are friendlies -- the worst is that the Russians will somehow cook the info and our missiles will preferentially take out Indian planes while leaving Rusian ones untouched.

Not that any of the stuff India gets will be top of the line, but the potential for mischief will be amazing.

“This is none of our business.”

I think the problem is this gives the Russians a view of how their hardware and software work against American technology that we have sold to India. This is why America is so upset with Turkey, who is buying the F-35. Having both pieces of hardware, and there is no way the Russian techs won’t see and evaluate the F-35 with their instruments, is the reason. It’s a legitimate concern.

OK, I give up - why do we care if the Indians buy an air defense system from the Russians, and why are we threatening sanctions against them for doing so? It's a defensive capability, and India will be using it to protect themselves from Pakistan and China - how is this a problem for the US?

I know the US is increasingly replacing the Russians as the primary defense supplier for India - I don't see how threatening sanctions is going to grow that relationship. If I'm trying to get a potential customer to give me more of their business, I don't punish them for doing business with others - I give them incentives to do business with me. This is just going to make India dig in its heels.

India has been an ally of Russia for 80 years. We have no reason to believe that Russia does not see every weapon India has. Most rockets and tanks used by the Indian army are Russian and have always been Russian. And besides the point that India will sell to the Russians anything we give them. They will also copy it and build it themselves. Then they will sell it to others.
