Trump: I asked GOP senator to go to his daughter's wedding instead of attend Kavanaugh vote

President Trump revealed Saturday that he had asked Montana Sen. Steve Daines (R) to take time off to attend his daughter's wedding over the weekend, causing him to miss a confirmation vote for Brett Kavanaugh, Trump's Supreme Court nominee.

The president tweeted Saturday afternoon following Kavanaugh's successful confirmation in the Senate that he advised Daines to skip the vote once Republicans learned that they had the necessary number of votes to prevail.

"I have asked Steve Daines, our great Republican Senator from Montana, to attend his daughter Annie’s wedding rather than coming to today’s vote," Trump wrote on Twitter shortly after the vote took place.

"Steve was ready to do whatever he had to, but we had the necessary number. To the Daines Family, congratulations-have a wonderful day!" he added in the tweet.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 6, 2018 Kavanaugh's nomination passed the full Senate on Saturday by a vote of 50-48, with the lone Republican in opposition, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R), voting "present" to honor her colleague Daines's support of the nominee.

Daines was the only senator to skip the final vote on Kavanaugh's nomination, which followed weeks of bitter partisan fighting in the Senate.

The judge's confirmation process was fraught with controversy after three women came forward to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault shortly after his hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee concluded. After a week-long FBI investigation into the claims, Democrats were unable to convince key swing-vote senators such as Maine's Sen. Susan Collins (R) to oppose the nomination.

Trump maintained support for his embattled nominee amid the accusations and subsequent FBI investigation, which Democrats criticized for being too narrow in scope.

My understanding is that if somehow McConnell did not have the votes and needed Daines, they could have held the vote open until Sunday until Daines could come back to Washington.

I think once the Daines wedding came up I think McConnell and Murkowski came up with this plan, to give Murkowski cover. I think had the wedding not come up, Murkowski probably would have been ‘aye’.

Correct. They had it covered. Pence there. One dem voting yes and he called Trump. Pairing votes. If issue Mitch would keep vote open for Daines.

That kind of talk is what gets Ann Coulter in trouble. Sometimes she sounds like a RAT.

No, on this she is right (not the wedding being spoiled), he had not business putting his daughter’s wedding ahead of his constitutional requirements. He is fortunate that Trump is giving him cover.

Old John Warner of VA cast a “no” on Judge Bork in 1987. Thereafter he became a full-fledged liberal.

Her comment about groom screwing bridemaid?Coulter’s statement was inappropriate. She has a potty mouth. I don’t like potty mouths.

Gee. This a different group of Freepers than the ones wailing on Daines for skipping town.

This time if Manchin actually pulls off a win in West Virginia he will change over to the Republican party within 90 days of the election.
Nobody wants to be on the losing side Especially when they already agree with the winning side 9 times out of 10.

That's also the kind of talk that explains why Ann Coulter is single.

It also explains why Bill Maher (yes, THAT Bill Maher) is her ex-boyfriend.
