CIBOLO, Texas -- A Byron P. Steele High School student is recovering after being bitten by a small rattlesnake Friday morning.

Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District said the student was bitten in the breezeway just outside of the gym. Coaches in the area killed the snake immediately and the student was sent to the hospital.

This is Texas. There are rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, etc.

This past spring I found in my backyard a copperhead, about a foot long, locked in mortal combat with a king snake about the same size. I pulled up a lawn chair and watched. The king snake won, of course. Fascinating stuff.

I couldd go look, but just WHAT does “Snake be gone” do....repel them?

I use “Snake Be Gone” around my chicken coop to keep the chicken snakes away. It seems to work.

I’ve killed two Copperheads in the last month around my house though, not anywhere near the chicken coop.

In a few months I will be wishing I lived anywhere in the south. I’ll remember your comment, make some hot cocoa and trundle through another Minnesota winter knowing that the freezing temps keep away poisonous creepy crawlies.

Well, at least you have SOME repellant...I didn’t realize that was out there...we don’t have much in the way of icky, poisonous things here...maybe brown recluse spiders....but rare...I can’t imagine living where they are there all around you. AAAGGHHHHH....kinda like the liberals here.

My older sister once rented a place out by Olney, moving in by Thanksgiving. Pretty cold winter that year.

Place had been occupied so she and her hubby spent about a week cleaning it up and fixing holes.

Then about March she hears thumps in the bedroom walls. OK, she thinks, the mice are back for Spring.

Nope, it turns out that rattlesnakes had decided to nest in the walls of that old farmhouse, and were waking up after hibernation.

I can't vouch for the story, except to say that my parents bought her a whole new set of furniture, since she was NOT going back to reclaim what was in that house.

My wife and daughter are Catholic. The (Catholic) school was having a “Bless Your Pet Day”, today. My daughter wanted to take in her pet rat snake... :-)

The repellent I rely on most is my shotgun. I’ve been around poisonous snakes all my life and couldn’t count the copperheads, cottonmouths and rattlesnakes I’ve killed in my lifetime. I could sit here and tell snake stories all night long!

That’s what we use out on the ranch.

But, around the house/driveway....we are pleased with the results of the repellent.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a snake on our driveway/car park (which runs between our house and garage).

Came down the stairs last week and had one at the bottom of the staircase. How long it had been in the house...I have no idea. It won’t be back.

Yeow! The wife of one of the section leaders at work got a dry bite from a diamond back when she got out of her car. She was lucky. In the desert southwest, if it don’t sting, bite, claw, peck, poison, prick, or cut it an’ t indigenous to Az.

Yeah everything seems to want to stick you, sting you or bite you around here. Hell even the ants too. They are called fire ants. Because when they bite you, you feel like your body is on fire.

Years ago while on the ranch, early morning, just sunup, I was schooching through a 3 wire fence and I didn’t notice the giant rat snake splayed along the top wire, well as I was half way through, the giant rat snake wrapped around my neck and it was trying bite me. Glad that the snake was not a copperhead.

Yeah, now we have those damn killer bees from South America to deal with. The scorpions aren’t so bad. Mainly non venomous.

Always check your boots in the morning. Hehehe

Correct me if I’m wrong - but aren’t smaller rattlers more dangerous because they empty their entire poison sac when they bite or something like that?

I lived 18 years in Detroit. Although there might not be too many of the creepy crawlies there (non human that is), the winters are long and often brutal.

I’ve been up your way in the summers, but never in the winter. I don’t want to freeze my face off. Hehehe

That is true, but smaller rattlers are more dangerous for me because I can't see nor hear the slimy $#*@! things.
