Trump’s making the point that it took Grant, a fighter, to beat Lee.
The story is famous.
“...I pressed upon him with all the earnestness I could command the immediate removal of Grant as an imperious necessity to sustain himself. As was his custom, he said but little...I appealed to Lincoln for his own sake to remove Grant at once...Lincoln remained silent for what seemed a very long time. He then gathered himself up in his chair and said in a tone of earnestness that I shall never forget: I cant spare this man; he fights.’

Lincoln did offer Lee command of the entire Union Army at the very beginning of the war.

To make liberals happy, you have to lie like them. Trump refuses to.

Arlington national cemetery was Lee's land. Are they going to disinter all those buried there in the name of political correctness?

Grant was relentless, and in my humble opinion, a greater General than Lee. Well, he did win. But, as time passed, Grant also had far greater resources, too.

You’re right. The leftist media doesn’t have a clue about decency and honor and righteousness.

Lincoln replaced Gen. George McClella with Grant for one reason:
“He fights.”
Grant went on to lead the Union to victory against Lee. Anyone who has ever visited Appomattox Courthouse will know this, So Trump’s comments are historically accurate. And in their failed effort to make Trump look like a fool, the mainstream “reporters” once again have displayed their own insipid foolishness.

Yes, as controversial as it may be, Grant was a great general.
To: EarlyBird
I’ve read Lee is the only General throughout history that was offered full command of both sides of an opposing force.

Lee had advantages because he was fighting a defensive war and was forced take risks for that reason. When your risky move span out, you look even smarter.
I wouldn’t say grant was a more brilliant military tactician than Lee was, but he at least knew what was necessary to beat Lee, and didn’t hesitate like McClellan and all those other clowns did.
A lot of men had to die, and Grant knew that. But he didn’t retreat after heavy losses, which helped him eventually beat Lee.

[Grant was relentless, and in my humble opinion, a greater General than Lee.]
Grant had way more resources to play with. I haven’t looked at Civil War campaigns in much detail, but my reflex is to say that Lee was superior, because he not only held the line, he took the war into Union territory despite operating on a shoestring, relative to the Union. The problem is that when your adversary has way more resources, he can also make way more mistakes than you and stay in the game. You can’t. And that was Lee’s downfall - he ran out of men and resources.
