HOWEVER - Trump does not need such reckless international allies - I can imaging he’s seething about the stupidity of this all. The optics are bad and because of apparent Saudi blood lust, he is now going to be under pressure at home. Probably another fart in the wind story, but the timing is bad.
In fact, it is such a crazy story, so sloppy, that one could be forgiven for thinking there could be an even greater conspiracy behind it all.

If a strongly worded diplomatic note was the appropriate response to that, then standing on the border and using an interpreter in American Sign, a diplomat can shout a condemnation while the signer translates. (More than appropriate for the circumstances.) And, given how diplomatic notes are paid attention to, it doesn’t even matter which border or if anybody is on the other side. I’d suggest a border close to a Starbucks and a five star hotel.

Just so the basis for my reasoning is clear, I have little regard for Saudi Arabia or its nationals as a group. My concern is with US strategic interests.
It must also be kept in mind that Khashoggi was likely a target because of his Muslim Brotherhood ties and sympathies. Since the Brotherhood is an enemy of the US as well as the Saudi Arabian regime, Khashoggi was more a common enemy than simply a reporter. It may be that he exhausted his implicit protection as a reporter by acting in some manner as an agent of the Muslim Brotherhood.
During the Cold War, the US rarely squawked overmuch when foreign allies arrested, imprisoned, or disappeared reporters who actively collaborated with or served as agents of communist secret services. The same reasoning applies here to urge a prudent restraint in avenging Khashoggi's disappearance and apparent death at the hands of the Saudi government.

Arabs don't even treat their cohorts all that nicely, I would assume that they take an even dimmer view of being highly critical of their “royal family” on foreign soil in foreign countries. Being Osama Bin Laden’s roomie and working as an advocate for the Muslim Brotherhood who are hoping to over throw the Saudi government probably didn't help much either.
There have been several reports that he may have been working for CIA. That may explain why Trump hasn’t said much.
FReeper sleuths, possible extreme importance (don’t know yet): I am seeing some items online (Twitter and linked items) that suggest the whole Khashoggi thing may turn out to be some weird intel set-up or propaganda ploy...... this does not mean he may not be dead (though we’ve seen no definite evidence of any kind), but that he may well have left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul alive and been kidnapped/eliminated elsewhere by forces as yet unspecified but not necessarily Saudi govt. A lot of this “info” seems kinda sketchy but possibly very revealing of a faked ploy, such as that the only known photo of Khashoggi and his alleged “fiance” waiting for him outside the consulate seems to have been photoshopped to place her into the scene. He may not even have been engaged, according to some online sleuths. Some very intriguing info on the following Twatter feed which I am trying to explore right now.
