Hungary ends funding for gender studies programs, calling them 'an ideology'

Hungary has ended funding for gender studies degrees at its universities, citing low enrollment and saying the field of study is an “ideology, not a science.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orban signed a decree that went into effect Saturday, effectively eliminating the degree program, according to Reuters.

The decree removes gender studies from the list of approved master’s programs. Students already enrolled are allowed to remain in the program.

“The Hungarian government is of the clear view that people are born either men or women,” Orban’s chief of staff Gergely Gulyas said in August. “They lead their lives the way they think best, but beyond this, the Hungarian state does not wish to spend public funds on education in this area.”

Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen said gender studies "has no business in universities" because it is "an ideology, not a science," according to Agency France-Press.

Orban, the right-wing populist leader who was re-elected in April to a third term, said that major cultural changes were to come. This week's decision marks the first major shift.

Budapest-based Central European University (CEU) is one of two universities in Hungary that offers gender studies programs. The school, founded by American billionaire George Soros, called the decree “a significant loss to the Hungarian scholarly community and for democratically-minded public policymakers.”

Eva Fodor, a professor of social sciences and humanities at CEU who has taught gender studies for 15 years, said the ban is “atrocious” and unheard of in democratic societies, according to Fox News.

If Orban is “far right”, as he is often labelled, I’m “far right” too. In the U.S., I don’t want the president or Congress to ban majors, but I’d like to privatize student loans. I bet private lenders would charge higher interest rates to gender studies majors than business or engineering majors.

Yes they should. If I had children today, I'd encourage them to go for an MBA.

Hungary continues to demonstrate reason in the face of Leftist compulsion driven antics. Good for Hungary.

They’ve already lived under communist insanity, so they know the BS when they see it.

I would go farther and change whatever legislation and/or tax code provisions that would make student loans dischargeable under U.S. Bankruptcy law. The colleges would go beserk but certainly be more thorough in their due diligence with prospective students and their parents’ ability to cover sprog debt.

The government there has just ended government funding for the subject, not prohibited it. If people want to study it, and pay cash, I don’t think anyone will stop them.

Privatize loans, plus make student loans dischargable in bankruptcy. People wanting to major in worthless subjects can pay cash up front.

You’d think. But when I lived in Canada during the Cold War, I had friends who had immigrated out of communist Hungary. They, in turn, had friends who also immigrated to Canada but went back to Hungary. They said they were terrified of possibly being out of work and being unable to support themselves. Back in Hungary, meager as it might been, they didn’t have to worry about economic security.

“...hey said they were terrified of possibly being out of work and being unable to support themselves....”

What a way to live. Guess they were less terrified of the commie political police watching their every move.

Sad, what that moronic evil system does to the Human Spirit.

“Hungary continues to demonstrate reason in the face of Leftist compulsion driven antics. Good for Hungary.”

Is this because they’ve gotten rid of George Soros?
