The Supreme Court will hear a case that could decide whether Facebook, Twitter can censor users
CNBC ^ | 10/16/2018 | Tucker Higgins

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that could determine whether users can challenge social media companies on free speech grounds.

The case, Manhattan Community Access Corp. v. Halleck, No. 17-702, centers on whether a private operator of a public access television network is considered a state actor, which can be sued for First Amendment violations.

The case could have broader implications for social media and other media outlets. In particular, a broad ruling from the high court could open the country’s largest technology companies up to First Amendment lawsuits.

That could shape the ability of companies like Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet’s Google to control the content on their platforms as lawmakers clamor for more regulation and activists on the left and right spar over issues related to censorship and harassment.

The Supreme Court accepted the case on Friday. It is the first case taken by a reconstituted high court after Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation earlier this month.

What happens if you don’t state your political preference, but it is assumed based on algorithms?

FWIW, Facebook has me listed as “very conservative” based on things that I “liked”, not on anything that I wrote, because I’ve never written anything political on that website. In the past, I posted photos of me and family, or maybe wildlife photos that I’d taken. Once I saw that they designated me as “very conservative”, I stopped posting and reacting to other people’s posts. They lost me that day.

FreeRepublic is done if they rule that they can’t censor users for political opinions.

Why would Free Republic be "done" if liberals were allowed to post here?

Personally, I think Jim ought to let liberals post here. I don't think they'd enjoy it much. Liberals need safe spaces and filters. Their ideas can't stand up to scrutiny. They'd come here with their talking points and without the protection of safe spaces and speech codes and get demolished.

Free Republic would do just fine.

We need legislation to either bust up these monopolies or to enforce fairness.

Social Media: Facist Book Burners

Let’s kick it off with this outrage:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3696604/posts

Facebook maliciously destroys $315,000 investment.

An investment made by triple amputee war hero.

“Why?”

Virtual ‘book burning’.

Facists and despots used to burn books. Now they delete social media accounts or zot search engine positioning.

And I bet the time value invested was worth a heck of a lot more than the green value.

Soros-funded Media Matters virtually admits it’s behind Facebook’s purge of political pages

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3696256/posts

On Friday, the George Soros-funded Media Matters for America virtually admitted it was directing a purge of more than 800 Facebook pages and accounts. It noted that Facebook shut down a bunch of pages run by “fake news” outlets on Thursday. But then said the social media giant missed some. Would not be surprised to see those “missed” sites shut down soon. [snip]

According to MMFA, sites that discuss terrorism and the plague of illegal immigration are necessarily “anti-immigrant” and “racist.” That is their bias. Media Matters plants disinformation daily, and this is just more of it. If Facebook follows their recommendations, that will be prima facie evidence that this thing is rigged. [snip]

I disagree, on the grounds that Alphabet has a virtual monopoly on social media. That’s what anti-trust laws are for. Either the company maintains its monopoly but is forced to allow all content, or it gets broken up. If Jack Phillips controlled every bakery in America, I’d want him to make the same decision. But he doesn’t, luckily. When you have a monopoly on something and then turn around and deny it to certain people, it’s no different than the government denying citizens their rights.

"Should they be allowed to simply omit whatever news doesn’t suit their leftist agenda, or misreport facts?"

That's pretty much what most of them do now anyway. The problem is that they and their Demonrat enablers don't like competition from the new media raining on their little Socialist/Marxist/Progressive parade and spoiling their narrative with the sheeple.

Not to mention their TOS seems applicable only to conservatives. There’s countless examples on Twitter of the vilest comments made by liberals allowed to stand while conservatives are banned at the whim of Jack Dorsey for the slightest transgressions, or none at all.

The termite remare of course was cover for the heavy duty anti-Sematic remark made recently.

Yes like I have said before, FB and twitter are operating as Political Action Committees and as such should be shut down until they do the proper paperwork to register as a PAC

If as they are not censoring leftist thought and accounts no action would be taken.)

And be fined billions of dollars (chump change to them but it would send a message)

I very much doubt that Facebook or Twitter admit that they have any bias other than being anti-racist, etc. That is breech of contract — people invested a lot of time in building up their accounts. Some spent a lot of money.

[But obviously I’m no lawyer.]

‘They’re redefining terms so that offensive and unacceptable refers to polite repeating of conservative views.’

Excellent point. People should be allowed to sue according to the time they invested in building up their accounts as well as advertising.

Leftist crudeness and near-terrorism is ignored.

GAB is a good example of another social media service. Both Google and Apple have banned it from their app stores, so it will never have a following. Wait until the ISP’s start banning ‘hate’ sites. It’s coming..

Oh no they will not admit their bias towards the left and against conservatism.

Lawyers speak a fair amount of Latin. They find out in a hurry if someone is posing. It’s almost like being a Catholic clergyman back in the Dark Ages.
