Florida’s culture clash pits Gillum against Trump voters

President Donald Trump’s loyalists here at Florida’s premier retirement community fear Andrew Gillum.

It has nothing to do with his race, they insist, when asked about the 39-year-old Democrat who could become the state’s first African-American governor. Instead, The Villages’ deeply conservative residents are convinced a Gillum victory would trigger an era of high crime, higher taxes and moral failing.

“He’ll kill everything that’s good about Florida,” says Talmadge Strickland, a 66-year-old retired firefighter wearing a “Trump 2020″ baseball cap at a rally for Gillum’s opponent. “He will hurt us; he will physically hurt us with his socialist mentality.”

In an era defined by deep political partisanship, there’s perhaps no state where the divide runs deeper than Florida, which is in the grip of a fierce culture clash over guns, race, climate change and the president. Gillum sits at the center of the melee, his campaign a proxy for the larger fight between Democrats and President Donald Trump’s GOP. …

Always about race for the left. I simply won’t vote for any liberal who is White, Black, Hispanic, Asian or any other race!

One thing worth remembering is that Gillum won the primary with just 34% of the vote. IMO this shows the lack of support within the Dem party for his candidacy in the general election. The polls are suspect. I don’t believe the race is that close.

I would hope you are right but I will say Desantis has run a very weak campaign (I am probably being positive saying it is only weak)...From what I can take away from his campaign at this time is...vote for me because I have an attractive wife and kid, i played on some little league team and i am an environmentalist to...Call me odd but I don’ think that is a winning campaign especially for the undecided voter...

My liberal mother just got back from early voting and voted straight Republican. First time in her life.

So far, in mail in votes received in Pasco, Reps 13,278 and Dems 11,533. In Pasco County, in 2016, Trump won 58% to 37%.

So what is wrong with the DeSantis campaign in Pasco County?

Florida’s culture clash pits Gillum against Trump voters

As an outsider, I'm concerned that the conservative part of Florida in the panhandle, having been ravaged by the hurricane, may not be able to deliver. Have most of the people returned, or are they still displaced, and will they get to the polls?

I believe he has done a very poor job of getting his name and message out. Also he has not made a good close on why he is the better choice...Gillum is a hard core leftist/socialist, I would think that would be an easy target but I see very few adds that get the message out about Gillum....maybe I am just missing the adds but I know I am not the only one...

So what did you think of the debate last night? I thought DeSantis drew some sharp lines between himself and Gillum.

Desantis did a good job..Gillum never answered a question he deflected...the problem, i fear, is a relative few watched...

Gillum is so much like the former mayor of Atlanta..the feds started by getting his outer ring of corrupt associates and moved in..after about three years the former mayor ended up in jail...it will be the same for Gillum

In the FL primary, DeSantis received 913,997 votes compared to Gillum’s 517,863. The Reps received more than 100K votes than the Dems. I just don’t see Gillum winning this race.
