I'd like to see the New Jersey come out of mothballs and fitted with a nuclear power plant. And then sail up and down the Taiwan straight 365 days a year.

Good! About time.
Let’s hope they don’t run into each other...
(Still can’t believe those accidents last year!)

One of the officers in charge of the said ships was a woman. What can you do?

We still have some cruisers?

They're built on a Spruance (destroyer) hull. But they were the first Aegis ships and they just couldn't call it a destroyer when it cost more than a billion dollars each. Nonetheless, the mission is pure escort - like a destroyers.
In contrast, they called the Zumwalt class ships "destroyers" even though their mission is much more like a traditional cruiser mission - mostly because it sounds less expensive to call them destroyers than cruisers.

USS Antietam (CG 54) is not a Coast Guard boat.
Should be USS Antietam (DDG 54)
Chances are that the hull would not stand up to sea duty any longer nor are there any powder or shells for the guns. Nice idea 50 years too late.

Could be wrong but I think CG stands for “Cruiser Guided [Missle]”

I worked with the U.S.S Antietam and she is a Cruiser-Cruiser Guided-(Missile Class).

The New Jersey...she’ll be fine, and recommend pulling off two of the main batteries anyway and wedging in VLS systems.
Give ATK the contract for brand new replacement 16” shells and propellant.
Pull out all the old wiring and give her current “avionics” and fire control. CIWS all over and nice new auto-cannons to replace the dual five inch mounts.
For somebody sitting (literally) in a Lazy Boy I sure do have a vivid imagination.

Heck, I want a battleship with drones for its own air cover, and drones for torpedo defense.
Leave a battery or two of 16 in guns to destroy.. anything- and cheaply!

That would be confusing insofar as the ship she is sailing with is already DDG-54, and (for what it’s worth) Wikipedia thinks the Antietam is a guided missile cruiser:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Antietam_(CG-54)
But I am not now, nor have I ever been in the Navy, and I could be quite wrong.

Wiki page:

What caught my eye was:
“During the deployment, she had an extended stay in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On the return to home port, she disembarked nearly a third of her active personnel in Florida to make room for family and friends of the remaining crew, who embarked in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to take part in a friends and family “tiger cruise” back to San Diego. “
Wow! When my Dad was in we got lots of tours, and even a short cruise in the Chesapeake- but nothing like that!

No flight deck, but if the drones can use the aft helipad then heck yeah!
