Could a Democrat win the Kansas governor's race? It's looking possible.

Kansas is a state entirely controlled by Republicans now and one that voted for President Donald Trump in 2016 by 20 points. And yet in a couple of weeks, voters there could elect a Democrat to be their governor for the first time in eight years - just in time to have a hand in the upcoming redistricting battle that could shape control of the state for the next decade.

Snip

Republicans' fears have so far become reality. Polls show Democrat Laura Kelly and Kobach running about even, with a third-party candidate, Greg Orman, taking about 9 percent of the vote (mostly from the Democrat, theorize election watchers).

Kobach has struggled to get out from under the Brownback legacy, but he also brings new baggage. Kobach is perhaps best known nationally and in Kansas as the voter-fraud guy. Voter ID laws are popular in Republican states, but Kobach took that to a new level in the past two years.

Snip

Democrats in Kansas agree that the race is basically about everything they're not. That's evidenced on the campaign trail, where Kelly - a decidedly less flashy character than Kobach - talks about how, as a legislator in the state Senate, she helped push the tax increase package that was a rebuke to Brownback.

Her campaign has gotten some serious momentum in the final weeks after being endorsed by every living former Republican governor of Kansas, save Brownback.

Kobach is doubling down on Trump, trying to drum up his and the president's shared base. One analyst watching the race said Trump's approval is about 50 percent, which isn't nearly as high as other conservative states - but at least the president is more popular than Kobach now, who polls in the 30 and 40 percent favorability rating.

Of course it was! But don’t you know cutting taxes always raises revnues.... The right wing dogma tells me so!....

Brownback should be a lesson to the “market uber alles” republicans... Its just as stupid a world view as “government uber alles”...

Markets are great, but they are not PERFECT.... and tax cuts don’t magically grow the economy in all circumstances.

Brownback was a disaster, and the fact the Democrat is 20 points ahead, especially if the GOP guy is running on tax cuts, makes me question the eductational system of Kansas.

The GOP there DESERVES to be punished for their gross incompetence... and if that punishment is 4 years of a Dem governor, so be it. IF the citizens of Kansas let the GOP slide for the fiasco and disaster they created in that state then they get what they deserve, because if the GOP (or any party) can get away with that much gross incompetence and not pay a price, then the government can pretty much get away with ANYTHING and the electorate will take it.

You are right but Kobach is going to have a career setback I will not enjoy all because Brownback doesn’t understand economics and foisted a bad plan on Kansas.

Kobach doesn’t want to call it what it was out of respect for Sam and that has cost him.

What a bunch of crap!

The Kansas government has a serious spending problem. It has for many, many years and eventually the chickens are going to come home to roost. The longer we put it off, the worse it’s going to be for many government services.

At least Governor Brownback tried to cut spending to go along with his tax cuts. That’s the right way to do it but the liberals in both parties, the corporate local medias, the government unions and everything else unholy to freedom and liberty threw such a hissy fit, the spending problems weren’t addressed and they kicked the can down the road.

Of course it was bound to fail so some of it is on Brownback but some of it is on the people of Kansas for buying in to the deceptions and lies of all those unholy to our freedom cause.

I can’t stand these lies and deceptions being spread in my state and elsewhere as the real serious problem in my state is spending. The whole leftist cabal here set it up to fail, knowing they could use it to get back power. It’s corrupt as h*ll if we let them get away with it. If we lose a good conservative candidate like Kobach it’s because of those who continue to spread those lies and deceptions.

Once again, the serious problem in Kansas government is spending and no liberal/progressive democrat is going to address the issue and I include Orman in that. They can only make the problem much worse. I hope my good people in Kansas come to understand just how much the liberal cabal here gangs up against us to deceive us try to regain power over this state.

Sincerely,
CGato
