“Nickname for Sault Ste. Marie?”

Exactly. Or so says the first line of the Wiki entry.

Trump Signs Bill Authorizing Construction of Second Large Freighter Sized Lock in Great Lakes

What would it have hurt not to be so cryptic?

Obama was pushing to get the Mike Fink Keel boats from Disneyland to solve this issue but couldn’t swing the deal. Oh well, MAGA.

All in a day’s work. Typical Washington DC, first approved in 1986 under Reagan, 32 years ago. Not Reagan, Bush, Clinton, W, or BHO made this a priority.

IIRC the Soo Locks/Canal was the most heavily protected area in the country during WWII. If the iron ore couldn’t get to the furnaces to turn it into military products then we were SOL.

Wife and i have sailed through the Soo locks a couple times.
We were guess of Interlake Steamship Co...

A steel mill on the Canadian side poped a flare just as we passed into Lake Huron, down bound to the Ford plant on the Rouge River...

Lock, which is what is used on a canal for varying elevations.

So, it’s referring to the size of a specific lock location that has the name of this person. Not a kind of ship or engineering term.

Sault is pronounced Soo. Saying Salt is a way of proving you aren’t a Michigan native. The locks are called the Soo.

Never tired of winning! I think it might be time to take a grandson to see the locks before they get all messed up by construction. It was closed yesterday or Tues. for 12 hrs. to make repairs.

Have you ever seen a ship go thru the locks? It is Awesome!!!

There are several locks in the Soo Locks. The Poe Lock is the largest at just over 1000 ft. long. The lock is the limiting factor on how large the ore freighters can be.

The last time I was there was about 20 years ago and they were talking about building another lock then for the massive behemoth 1000 footers.
