German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced she will give up leadership of her center-right Christian Democrat Union (CDU) party after 18 years in the post, German media has reported.
Merkel announced during a meeting with officials that she will not seek to run for re-election at the party's convention in December. But she made clear that she wanted to remain as chancellor, a position she has held since 2005, CNN affiliate RTL reported, citing party sources.
Angela Merkel's Bavarian allies lose majority in crushing vote The announcement is a sign of Merkel's weakened power within her own party, and waning popularity in the country.
Both parties under Merkel's ruling coalition -- the CDU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) -- suffered heavy losses in a regional election over the weekend.

Regarding the “center right thing.”
In Europe everything is left shifted. This, if one were to transpose their spectrum on the U.S. Pelosi would be considered center right and Sanders centrist. All others tomthe right of Pelosi would be labelled “Right Wing.”
The media in this country is constantly trying to impose the Euro-political spectrum.

Close but not quite. There is only pinko-left and far left. Nobody has the concept of limited government like in the USA, and there is a lot of revanchism for the empires of old on the continent.
And what they call “far right” is obviously far left, but with an emphasis on national chauvinism instead of internationalism.
Well, Occasional-Cortex certainly figured the Dems to be “red”, insisting on seats in MO and KS to be “flip(ped)…red” a few months back.
