MIDTERM polls are pointing towards a Congress flip on November 6, as discontent with President Donald Trump reigns among the US public. What would happen if the Democrats won in the House of Representatives?
The House of Representatives and the Senate are both up for reelection on November 6, with both chambers sporting a total of 470 free seats altogether.
The available 435 seats on the House of Representatives mean every member is to be replaced, so Democrats have a valuable opportunity to wrestle control.
If this was to happen, Donald Trumps job would become immediately more difficult.
The Republicans would ultimately find it much more difficult to pass laws, and Mr Trump may even see impeachment proceedings initiated against him.
What will happen if Democrats win the House of Representatives?
The House of Representatives is one part of Congress two-chamber system, and is vital for forming and passing bills through the US Government.
Bills are introduced and then voted on in the chamber, and are later passed to the Senate for official assent before they reach the President.
A majority of votes in the House are required for them to be passed, so parties are vying for control as it means they can easily progress their own introduced bills.
At the moment, a Republican controlled House means bills are accelerated in favour of Donald Trump.
If Democrats were to gain control of the house they would be able to resist Republican bills by voting against them in a majority.
This would mean many wouldnt reach the Senate in the first place, taking away valuable power from the Republicans and out from under Donald Trump.
In addition, Democrat introduced bills would be accelerated through Congress, meaning it could be possible to repeal laws already passed by Mr Trump, and introduce more Democrat-backed laws.
The most important issue stemming from a Democrat controlled house would be the ability to introduce impeachment proceedings however.
Under United States constitutional law, the power of impeachment is granted to the House of Representatives.
Any impeachment proceedings are commenced by a member of the House in the form of a resolution, and referred to a federal committee within the chamber.
Usually, this is the House Committee on the Judiciary, which votes to authorise the beginning of impeachment proceedings against the President.
After deliberation, the resolution is reported to the whole house with recommendations for voting.
The House of Representatives debates on the resolution and then may pass it on to the Senate to initiate impeachment proceedings with a majority vote.
If Democrats were to become the majority in the House of Representatives, they would be able to vote the impeachment through to the Senate, which could result in an impeachment trial for Donald Trump.
However, the ones who would determine whether Mr. Trump was guilty or not would be Senators in the Senate chamber acting as a jury.
At the current rate, only 35 members of the Senate are up for reelection from a Republican majority, and recent polls show Democratic Senators are having trouble garnering the votes necessary to flip the house.
I can’t help wondering if POTUS would have released the FISA docs without redaction, as he said he was going to do, that we wouldn’t be facing the possibility of losing the House.
I’m trying to figure out why he chose to delay the release until after the election.
“Im trying to figure out why he chose to delay the release until after the election.”
I’m down to 2 possibilities. He or his family are literally under the gun or our corrupt DOJ refused to release the docs. I’m thinking it’s the latter and PDJT doesn’t want this massive constitutional crisis exposed. (As if we haven’t seen enough already)
>>our corrupt DOJ refused to release the docs... PDJT doesnt want this massive constitutional crisis exposed
************************************************************
I think this is likely the case, which means that he weighed having a constitutional crisis against the possibility of losing the House, and decided losing the House was the lesser risk.
He is campaigning very intensively, which tells me it’s needed.
As Franklin Graham has stated, “Pray and VOTE”!
If the Pubs lose the House, do you think POTUS will proceed with firing Sessions and Rosenstein?
“If the Pubs lose the House, do you think POTUS will proceed with firing Sessions and Rosenstein?”
He’ll have nothing to lose at that point. The dems will impeach him regardless. I’d fire them all. Rotten rod, Jeff Magoo, Mueller....gut the entire DOJ.
“He is campaigning very intensively, which tells me its needed.”
He’s campaigning harder than those running for office. He knows the stakes. The republican pols make me physically ill.
The scary thing is that I think mueller is going to drop an impeachment report to the new congress regardless of whether or not he’s fired. Depending on what’s in it, Trump may not only be impeached but also removed from office. The rinos and the neverTrumpers in the senate will be ‘upholding the rule of law’ dontchaknow.
Thank you for all of your replies and the bookmarked video link. I very much respect your opinion and point of view.
Joe DeGenova is #1 in my book, haven’t seen anyone sharper than him. He’d make a fantastic AG.
It looks like the midterm election results will definitively determine whether America will be restored or continue its devolution into hard tyranny.
Either way, tyrants don’t willingly cede power back to the people. I suspect the country will not escape likely bloody acts.
Thanks again for your replies.
if the dems win the next 2 years will be a complete shitshow
“Either way, tyrants dont willingly cede power back to the people. I suspect the country will not escape likely bloody acts.”
Ain’t that the truth. May we live in interesting times.
“Joe DeGenova is #1 in my book, havent seen anyone sharper than him. Hed make a fantastic AG.”
I like him a lot, too. He may be a prima donna but he’s a fighter. I listened to that radio replay again and it sounds like rotten rod is not only refusing to release the docs but blackmailing Trump with the threat that mueller will add an obstruction of justice charge to his long laundry list. Unbelievable, really.
‘Our’ corrupt stasi state is completely out of control.
40%? Try 51% as of Tuesday, with Black support at 41%. If that makes Trump “unpopular,” then give me more unpopularity, please.
Yea, well, the official MSM mantra is that the public is discontented with Trump. I'm not... in fact, I'm very pleased that he's following through with what he promised to do. There's still a lot to do... it's a huge project that he's taken on, but he shows no signs of slowing down.
If the Dems do take the Congress, it will be only by a slight margin... not enough to produce veto-proof legislation. It won't be all that much different from the past 2 years with all the RINO's in Congress. Having Ryan as speaker was about as helpful as a cat turd.
We'll still control the Senate, and hopefully have a little more control of it.
This is a long game... the 2020 elections will cement the deal. If the Dems control the house for 2 years, they might just prove to everyone that the Democrat Party is out of answers and are just a bunch of octogenarian power-crazy lunatics.
If we get the proper state governments into place this year, then do our redistricting as needed, and take advantage of the Dems' lack of leadership.... we can sweep things in 2020 and Trump can let loose and really go for the kill on the swamp.
How can they? Obama keeps trying to claim it's all because of him...
