The leading migrant caravan trying to make its way to the United States border is admitting defeat after asking the Mexican government to provide dozens of buses to speed up the group's journey northward.
The setback comes days after caravan leaders asked for safe and dignified transport to Mexico City, a checkpoint along the way for a group that has been dwindling in size as members either apply for protected status in Mexico or drop out over fatigue exacerbated by the sweltering weather conditions they have been facing.
"The attempt to travel by bus failed," caravan coordinator Walter Cuello told the Associated Press Wednesday night.
It has been a tumultuous journey so far for the leading caravan, which is now estimated to contain around 4,000 people down from a peak of more than 7,000.
The caravan crossed into Mexico from Guatemala around Oct. 19 and, at the start of this week, appeared to be pushing northward at a faster pace with the help of free rides being offered to them in trucks and other vehicles.
But the arduous nature of the trek walking day by day to new towns and cities and sleeping on the streets has been eating away at the migrants morale from the outset. The request for bus travel for all also indicates an increased sense of urgency amongst the caravans members to make it to the U.S. border despite thousands of American troops awaiting them there and a steady drumbeat of warnings from President Trump and U.S. officials to turn around.
"Of the friends that I have been with, all want to go back," Hasiel Isamar Hernandez, a 28-year-old mother of three from Honduras, told the Associated Press days ago. The caravan originated in that country as many are trying to flee...

They don’t want to...all South Americans would be here if they could do so.
I would be more than happy to donate to a GoFundMe for busses for them provided they loaded all the women and children on them then drove them back South. Get rid of the props and then let our Military face down the fighting age boys who just walked 1000+ miles.
The next up and coming Leftist President will grant immediate passage into what will be North Mexico.
Why the heck would Mexico want these people to get to Mexico City?
Yeah. Them and more than half the world too.
I’d rather see our military provide the non criminal fighting age men the training needed to make their country great.
Chilling thought!
We could go in, effect regime change, and take their oil. Just like we did in Iraq.
LOL!
Arrest the coordinators and the caravans fall apart.
They elected leaders a couple days ago. Would this make them their own little country? Invasion from a foreign country...
Already tried that before... they wouldn’t get on the buses for fear they would be taken back to their country.
At issue is these groups are too worn and tired to return to to their own country as well as too tired and worn to continue to the US. Between a rock and hard place a bus ride anywhere is what they want.
We’ll likely see just that or the organizers will abandon them to fend for themselves..... The government leaders really don’t care except in regards to the economic or political capital it will cost.....the people are expendable.
Wheres that cat 5 hurricane?
This is fulfilling my prediction that the Mob will run out of steam about the middle of Mexico. It looks like that the Mob may not even make it that far.
It has served a couple of good purposes, though: it has allowed the President to use it’s threat to benefit the upcoming elections; and it gave certain Freepers the chance to call for mass slaughter and to look like idiots.
Indeed, it would be anti-climatic to have a pitiful few show from “thousands” so hopefully that is exactly what will happen. It would be nice to know just how many people are in the Mobs and exactly where the lead elements are.
With the following Mobs that have been reported how can the first one turn around and start to retreat without chaos?
This whole episode has hurt Mexico far more than the US and will continue to cause major disruptions.
They could join the rest of their family.
I think the new Mexican President Manuel Obrador is planning to be more cooperative with the USA. So he may be at odds with the outgoing Mex. Pres. Enrique Pena Nieto.
Nieto may still be upset at Pres. Trump for highlighting the Wall and saying he was going to make Mexico pay for it.
Nietos’ popularity sank after that speech appearance they held on the same stage.
