Washington, DC, Dould Let 16 Year Olds Vote for President
Yahoo News ^ | 11/2/18 | AP

The Washington, D.C., City Council is preparing to vote on a bill to lower the voting age to 16 for all elections, both local and federal.

WTOP-FM reports the bill won 3-0 approval in the Judiciary and Public Safety committee Thursday and will get a final vote before the full council this month. The 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees citizens 18 and older the right to vote, but scholars have said it doesn't prevent a state, or in this case, the nation's capital, from setting a lower age.

Council member Charles Allen says his bill will "enfranchise the District's young people and bring their voices into the political process."

The 26th Amendment applies to D.C.

And the 26th Amendment does not prohibit a voting age of under 18.

Well, then they should have two Senators also, correct?

DC passing laws that are unconstitutional is nothing new.

How would a voting age of 16 be unconstitutional?

I think maybe they were speaking of DC not having senators, but maybe voting themselves 2 anyway?

Here’s what I Googled:

In the United States House of Representatives, the District is represented by a delegate, who is not allowed to vote on the House floor but can vote on procedural matters and in congressional committees. D.C. residents have no representation in the United States Senate.

The requirements for gun purchase and voting should be identical.

"DC is not a state...."

If I'm not mistaken, Congress can nullify any law passed by DC. But I do believe the individual states can decide how, when, where and who they allow to vote and how they will apportion the vote to the electoral college.

Their teachers will help them vote the right way!

You bet. It’s like giving each teacher like 35 votes.

Did any state let persons under 21 vote before the amendment lowered it to 18?

Hey kids, old enough for voting, old enough for the draft and old enough to be prosecuted as adults for your crimes.

See, there needs to be a basic civics test to vote for those under 35...

Q: What are Tide PODS for ?

Answers:
A, For laundry
B, For a yummy snack
C, For laundry AND a yummy snack

Failure to answer this question properly means you are barred from voting until 40.

Since it took a constitutional amendment to lower the voting age for federal elections from 21 to 18, why does DC think they can lower it to 16?

For that matter, the entire DC government is unconstitutional.

There is precedent for that. Wyoming Territory allowed women to vote as early as 1869, upon territorial organization - it’s just that in 1920, states could not deny the right to vote on account of sex.
