Opinion: On climate change, our plan is to wait for emergency evacuation of the planet
The Washington Post ^ | November 13, 2018 | By Tom Toles, Editorial cartoonist

There are tentative efforts being made to put a few people on Mars to try and survive in a bunker under constant high radiation in sub-frigid temperatures in an atmosphere 100 times thinner than Earth’s. If we make good progress on this endeavor, we will be able to evacuate the population of Earth into space around the year Never.

But this is apparently our plan to deal with climate change, because we don’t have any other one. Because the best current estimates are that we need to start significant action on the problem right now, and what we see is …

What we see is continuing successful efforts to strangle action in its crib led by, what else, massive oil-company money.

Just as seeing schoolchildren gunned down doesn’t lead us to action on assault rifles, neither does seeing people incinerated to ashes and bones in their houses or cooked alive in their cars lead us to act on the planetary assault rifle of unregulated emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The difference here is that the atmosphere, once fully loaded, will never stop firing at us.

The election we just experienced was perhaps the beginning of a new era of sanity, demanding what we want in the face of a thousand obstacles. We were waiting for the adults in the room to stand up and do something, and now we have finally realized that we ourselves are going to have to be the adults.

Go for it, you Leftists. But not a dime from the rest of us. We’ve been promised your utopia before, and all we got was the bill for the big mess the US is in.

Ok, Democrat House - you’ve heard the wishes of your nutty base. Pass a “climate” bill so Trump can bludgeon you with it in 2020.

No, it’s NOT the overcrowded, too-dead forests in California that have caused the horrific fires - IT’S:

....” the planetary assault rifle of unregulated emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere” ......

Lunacy. Idiocy. Willfully stupid.

I think they’re trying to make us lose our minds before ‘20. And it might happen.

Not this guy this time....

The author failed to recognize his script has its roots in the Book of Revelations.

Getting used to all this LIB/lefty/DIM lunacy is difficult. Lunatics are all that these days. From their diseased perspective...if you aren’t a fellow lunatic, something is “wrong” with you.

Worst case scenarios in global warming is a rise in the ocean level of a few feet (which would stink for those living on the soon to be upper continental shelf) and a temperature change equal to moving a couple hundred miles south.

I'm trying to figure out New Yorkers wailing about this and then moving to Florida which, I figure, must be a flaming heat death because NY to Miami is a bigger warming than the worst case of global warming.

So I didn’t click on the article, because the exurpt is preposterous. It looks like it should be from the Babylon Bee.

Let me get this staright;
because the atmospheric temperature MIGHT/MAY get warmer by a few degrees in a few centuries (but it probably wont), we should attempt to traverse millions of miles in cold, hard outerspace to a remote, desolate planet with virtually no atmosphere to work with, and a climate that is not only a million times more drastic than ours but probably would never be capable of terra-forming because the pressures are not achievable, and the only redeeming quality of the planet is that it doesn’t have methane like most planets do and it probably has water, although it’s frozen and underground.

This is like suggesting you need to evacuate a cruise ship and get on a wooden row boat because the cruise ship has termites

I’m all on board. Just present me with the mitigation plan, the cost, who pays for it and who gets the money.

Haven’t seen any of that in 30 years. Why?

There is no conceivable scenario, including all-out Nuclear War, that will make the surface of the Earth 1/100th as inhospitable as the surface of Mars.

To transport infrastructure all the way to Mars in order to deal with a non-life-supporting environment makes no engineering sense at all. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

It is an emotional argument, and nothing more.

The Democrat politicians in California are too busy stuffing their pockets full of money from a make believe train line to worry about things like the safety of California’s citizens.
