Cruz would have been a disaster had he been the 2016 nominee. Non Texans have no idea how repulsive his oily, TV preacher-like style can be to many Americans. He would have been CRUSHED and Hillary would have won at least 40 states.

I'm really concerned how close it was in Texas - which is rapidly transforming into a blue state. I know the Texans here like to boast on how conservative they are compared to the rest of the country but I hope these results were a wake-up call for them. Instead of patting themselves on the back all the time, maybe they need to look inward and set things right in their own backyard before it is too late. They also should probably come up with another Republican senator to run in 2024 because the Dems are likely to flip the seat next time around if he is the incumbent.

Some of us do. I think he is unintentionally pretty funny.

Greg Abbott won by 1.1 million. Candidates matter.

Not true at all. If Hillary was running against Cruz for Senate in Texas, she would’ve lost by 10 or 15 points. Beto was simply a very appealing candidate funded with ENORMOUS, record-breaking amounts of money and given fawning media attention that made him a national household name. No GOP Senator nationwide but Cruz could’ve won a campaign against him. Beto would’ve crushed Trump in the national election. Trump and Hillary had extremely high unfavorable ratings. Hillary was easy to beat and Trump barely beat her, losing the popular vote. Cruz would’ve done better.

All true. Conservatives need to wake up and realize that the reason conservatism has lost so much ground is because there aren’t enough conservative voters to elect a strict doctrinaire conservative in many states, or in the USA. Pay attention to ho Trump won or get ready to keep losing.

No one in any of these midterms had the kind of personal appeal Trump has, but Robert O’Rourke came closer than anyone and damn near defeated a strict conservative in a traditionally conservative state.

Wake up Republican Party and start grooming some better candididates! Like O’Rourke, just for pity sake do not give them fake Hispanic nicknames.

Beto had coattails and helped elect many liberal Democrat judges and ten or so new state representatives and two state senators. Cruz had no discernible coattails. Several other statewide races were about as close a Cruz’s total vote.

I’m worried. I read Williamson County, just north of Austin’s Travis county is undergoing a huge housing boom and I know the people flooding in will be transplants from California and other blue states. The lady that ran against John Carter was blanketing the airwaves with ads. She lost, but it was much closer than it could be.

Cruz should have been able to put Beto away. The democrats have learned that if they spend 5:1 or 6:1 against a weak Republican, they have a good chance to win.

Cruz didn’t do much to grow goodwill with his antics in 2016 and it looked like some Texans held grudges. Moreover, he was busy with the Kavanaugh hearings and wasn’t on the ground in Texas like Beto was.

Blue areas of TX are probably going to grow like mold in a petri dish unfortunately. They did it in Virginia over the last 10 years.
