Good post. People today forget how chaotic, frenzied and terrified the country was in 1861. It must have seemed like the end of the country to people living back then.

Well it would have been. Once the precedent is set that you can leave the union just because you don't like who was elected you can't go back. And the Confederacy tried many times to get Kentucky and Missouri, and claimed them as part of the Confederacy and had stars representing those states on the Confederate Flag. I'm sure if they would have won their independence they would have attempted to negotiate their incorporation into the CSA.
